Out today and used my bins for the first time for about 12 months.

No obvious damage but I am getting a double image! At all distances.

plastimo 7x50pwp
wide angle
122m/1000m

I dont want to have to replace cause their only about 18mnths old. Any ideas on the problem? or repair options?

all contibutions welcome and appreciated.

Sounds like a parallax problem. Often caused if bins get a knock or dropped. Can be sorted but not cheap. Google "binocular repair" and you should come up with someone who can help.

double image = displaced prisms if applicable & lenses. out of collimation I think is the correct term where the light path through each side is not parallel

the fix

buy a new set as repair usually costs as much or more

google monk optic for replacement, no connection other than as a satisfied customer

As others have said, a collimation error - one prism knocked out of alignment. Cheap bins unlikely to be easily adjustable, as expensive ones are. Worth trying various bangs & thumps in different directions to see if you can knock it back into place.....

Otherwise shut one eye or buy new.....

Re-collimation costs in the order of £40 and is usually worth doing and very successful on good quality bins. On plastimos .... ? Bin the bins or make two monoculars.

It is worth unscrewing all the parts you can ie lens particularly the front ones. I have had this problem where the drop has displaced the lens off its thread and refitting fixed the problem. good luck olewill

stripped all i could (much is sealed), looked at new prices and decoded to try the cure or kill method of banging the things (even if it did not fix them it made me feel better) and it worked!!! no doubt it will reoccur but it proves what a usefull resource this forum is.... thanks to all!

Just found this on Google as I have the same binoculars with the same problem. A gentle knock on the floor in the direction of the error and no double vision!

'Eccy Thump is the first rule of Coarse Engineering :)

Somehow the collimation (the cantering of the optical axis of both left and right units); has gone out of alignment, possibly a knock, it is possible to diy re-collimate but the method depends a lot on the make of the binoculars, there are specialists who will re- collimate them for you , as morgandlm suggests it will cost about £40.
Perhaps think about replacing them?
