"Plastic" teak & holly

Re: \"Plastic\" teak & holly

We have a plastic veneer 'teak and holly' look alike which has been glued down to our existing floor panels (by the previous owner). Looks ok, but the glue has started to lift in some places meaning it has lifted on one panel - also its very delecate and prone to cracking at the edges when the floor is lifted - wouldn't recommend it.

Re: \"Plastic\" teak & holly

I bought 6mm teak and holly ply and epoxied it straght onto the existing sole boards. About £120 a sheet (just over 40 a sq m)

Re: \"Plastic\" teak & holly

Wilks do an indoor version of TekDek with a choice of either white or black sealant lines between the fake teak strips. I think it looks pretty good and is warm on the feet.

Re: \"Plastic\" teak & holly

We were considering ply for the sole, (Imitation teak n holly) but have decided to go the right way (for us !) and fit 10mm teak strips 50 mm wide with holly or eucolyptus as the filler piece. (This is planned - not done yet as we are still in the middles of the cabin refit). plan is to put a simple rabbet in the edge of the teak strips with a router - 5mm deep by 6 mm wide - and then after laying the floor infil with the contrasting wood.. sand and satin varnish.
Here in spain it is cheaper than ply. and looks so much nicer - and can be refinished if needed.

Re: \"Plastic\" teak & holly

Hmmm i was going to buy some teak and holly ply for cuchilo's cockpit but having just cut down a eucolyptus tree in my garden i may just buy the ply and rebate that in myself .

Re: \"Plastic\" teak & holly

Hi Cuchilo.. might as well get the teak too, o, go against tradition and have a eucolyptus and teak sole... ie - use the tree... its a beautiful wood.

get the table saw and dado out - or the router lol..

Re: \"Plastic\" teak & holly

10mm teak is OTT. Most teak and holly ply have a top veneer of about 1.6mm. Wear is minimal if it is sealed. I have had success with 2.6mm teak veneers from Robbins for both cabin soles and cockpit seats. Epoxied down then payed with either black pigmented epoxy or Sikaflex.

However, if you teak is cheap - go for it, just seems like a waste of such good wood!

Re: \"Plastic\" teak & holly

I live in London , teak aint cheap ! As i boat on the Thames and the cockpit can be undercover i think i will go for marine ply and let the timber into that .

Re: \"Plastic\" teak & holly

One of our local boat builders use a type of formica which is "plastic" teak & holly.

Don't know if available in UK.

A friend does work for the local boat builder so could find South African supplier if that helps.
