I'm looking to replace the shroud covers on my Europa - the old ones were very old and cracked and had to go.

I've been looking at this sort of thing, but does anyone have a better (more PBO ;)) solution?

I think the shrouds are 4mm (does that sound right on a Hunter Europa? I cant get to the boat to check at the mo!)...

Thats the stuff - although you can split your own plastic pipe and then tape it up if you are a real cheapskate!. You can get these in any decent chandler very cheaply.

I have piping on the babystay and the port and starboard forward shrouds where chafe protection is a benefit. I would never fit those shroud boots for the reasons already stated i.e. you can't see what is going on underneath. I put rigger tape around the part of the bottlescrews where the split pins are exposed and likely to tear sails.

That looks more or less what I have, except mine aren't colour coded ... that's a gimmick if ever I saw one!

Fairly hard plastic, "snaps" over the wire, doesn't need "taping up".
It would be difficult to slit the type of tubing used yourself I think.

God knows how many years mine have been on there, longer than I can remember. 20 at least. No signs of UV degradation and no evidence of corrosion of the wires.

I might be tempted to fit one size larger rather than the "correct" size but it could prove to be a mistake. No problems with the correct size.

Don't guess your wire size you definitely would not want it a size too small.

Bought mine over the counter at one of the local chandlers.

I don't have boots over the bottle screws just the shroud covers makes the bottom 6ft look as though it is plastic coated.

You might also like to consider these.. Speed rollers

Thanks chaps.

Believe it or not Dylan, I think the ones I've found are cheaper than pipe! (Well the pipe in the same online store anyway)

I may get a roller for the baby stay... (not that I usually bother fitting it! :o)

Cheers
Jon

I have the speed rollers on the forward and middle shrouds and they work fine but do they rattle on the shrouds when it's windy.

LR,

the Anderson ( for the benefit of readers the Europa is smaller sister of the A22 ) had a mix of 4 & 5mm wires when new, I'd definitely say 4mm will be the stuff for the Europa.

Bear in mind that stainless steel resists corrosion by means of a passive layer that forms and self-heals in the presence of oxygen. Excluding oxygen by means of plastic covers, tape, etc. can have a deleterious effect.

But my experience in 20+ years with these covers is that there is no problem.

If the oxide film was lost and ( crevice) corrosion started the evidence in the form of rust stains would be clear to see.

There is no problem!

From minor experience on different boats with different solutions, most are too loose to trap water and most can be easily slid up the shrouds to inspect any horrors lying beneath. But in truth I would still bear it in mind.....
