Plastic cable ties: Anyone else daft enough...

come on now - you cant keep your best bodge to yourselves.

wonder who invented cable ties. its one of those things like cats eyes, or road cones, zip fasteners etc that are never noticed but are everywhere

Re: Plastic cable ties: Anyone else daft enough...

My boat stands for months idle alongside a pontoon .... suffering gales, wind, rain .... sh&& and shine ......

I have probably replaced a dozen ties in the 4 years that she has sat in that marina out of the 20 or so that are holding the dodgers on .... those being nearly all the bottom ones that are about half max length ....

I used to have cord fixing them on and found it less than satisfactory. The ties are cut close to the locking tab and turned so that the hard bit is outside and not sticking in your back etc. ......

I have actually thought about using Fishing snap hooks ... which are extremely light, small and strong ... sort of safety pin style action.

Another has posted that with ties that it is difficult to drop guard lines with ties used on dodgers .... sorry but for me - its a big knife anyway if cord or ties ... as speed and life is more important than untieing a few cord knots ...

as others have said - the clear/white'ish ones no good outdoors for long periods.

at home, we've a string of festoon lights & a heavy power cable all cable tied to a bit of catenary wire between house/garage. Been up since 1998/9 & all cable ties still intact.

Found the white ones go brittle even out of daylight.

Re: Plastic cable ties: Anyone else daft enough...

Ackshully, they were only put on in October this year - we'd already undressed the boat for lift-out which didn't happen owing to gales, hence the dodgers were re-fitted for winter sailing. B&Q's best they were.

I put it down to sub-zero temperatures coupled to gales.

Does Tesco sell a better quality plastic cable tie?

Well, the 'clothes pegs' that some spiteful person noticed in this snap.

are clippy thingies for the dodgers, the first lasted 10 years including a year in the hot. I bought mine form the chandlery at Lymington Town Quay for about a couple of quid for the set from memory. Like jemmie I use bungie to affix the sides and bottom to whatever they are affixed to.

Don't let this stop creating yuor own from fairy liquid bottles and toilet rolls tho' /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Definitely heard before that clear/white ones are affected by the sun. How that happened in Ardrossan I'll never know!
I had mine held on for 3 years with black ones only had to cut them off this winter when boat was lifted out.
I tried cord, but with the slightest movement it just seemed to wear through.
