A friend of mine's Texas based son is buying a new Pogo 36, built at St Marine, opposite Benodet on the Odet, in southern Brittany.

He wants to sail it this summer in France, then lay it up on shore securely, before returning to sail it to the USA the following year.

Where is there to lay up, preferably that you have used, let's say between Brest and Saint-Nazaire?

As well as security, access by public transport from Paris is a consideration.

On the doorstep is Loctudy near the manufacturer which may be handy in the first season. It is a small, laid back and likable place with a reliable bus to Quimper for mainline Paris trains.

He may prefer La Forêt-Fouesnant, also nearby, and one of the spiritual homes of the French fast sailing fleet. There is nothing that they don't know or have on site and they handle this sort of boat routinely. Huge marina with a nice village a pleasant walk, or bike ride, away. Again you would probably use Quimper for transport.

Out of range, but La Rochelle has everything plus air links which are just a regular service bus ride from the town.

I’ve always thought Foleux marina/boatyard on the Villaine river, just up from La Roche Bernard, has good lay up potential. As well as being a lovely spot.

Having kept my Twister there for more than 7 happy years I would readily agree. It is a little paradise.

BUT there is no public transport and the nearest shops are several miles away.
