Hi,
Does anyone know where one can buy secondhand brass piston hanks??? furthermore does anyone know if plastic hanks are any good for a cruising yacht ,(I keep the jib on the forestay when not in use).
Thanks

Try Foulkes Chandlery Barge on the Hamble.

I was in there briefly on Friday, and they do indeed have sheafs of old piston hanks hanging up. However, that place always manages to surprise me with how much they'll charge for apparently useless old junk (not that everything in there is useless by any means, just the bits I tend to buy :) ). So I dread to think what they'll want for piston hanks - do check before asking for a dozen of them!

Well that's true - especially for anything that's hanging up behind the counter, which seems to mark a dividing line between tat and nautical memorabilia!

You might try Seateach, they do buy and sell s/h sails. Or used to, couldn't see anything on the online shop. Nor Classic marine: I got a bit distracted, browing Classic marine is like walking through a virtual chandlery barge sometimes. :)

I've got 2 or 3 in a drawer somwhere as well, if we all club togerther you might end up with a set!

Are they the same people who had a shed in East London? very Steptoe & son sort of place.

I remember what must be 40 years ago on a visit to UK and London Thomas Foulkes was an attraction for to us Ozies at the time for cheap chandlery. Yes it was a bit of a dark dingy place but I loved it. I presume the Foulkes referred to is somehow related. More recently I think almost everything is cheaper in Oz. Or it was, our Oz dollar has lost 10% in the last 2 weeks. grumble olewill

It'll lose some more when the Lions kick the Wallies into touch.... ;)

I would look out for a used sail with hanks fitted there must be sheds loads knocking about since roller furling became indispensable
