1/. Did they get put on in the first place....??
2/. Do I get them off without a hacksaw....??

The bronze 'tail' was hammered (or pressed) down to fit.

You can open them back up with a large flat screwdriver, but you can't guarantee their integrity for further use.

When they are new the claw is open. It is then bent over to secure it loosely around the eyelet. You can try prizing it open but, depending on its condition, it might break.

and then they are clamped closed. Removal is the reverse, but a hacksaw may do just as well.
Those type of slides would normally be fitted with a sewn loop of webbing.

There are alternatives normally only a couple of quid each if that....

VicS - little unfair... we sometimes have the desire to do things in a seamanlike and proper manner, but we don't always have the readies to do it unfortunately.....
