What bent the con rod?
I have had similar problems where no 1 cylinder bends the push rods. Valve seat and valve stem are coked up after a very short time, few hours. Engine Volvo md2
The fact that there was a can of Easy Start on the boat when you bought it doesn't automatically prove that this was the cause of the engine damage, does it?
Easy Start? unlikely: partial seizure or 'snatching' will do this, and can be caused by lube failure or overheating. The broken rings are unlikely to have damaged the bores, but carbon build up in the ring groove can expand them enough to cause the piston to snatch, break the ring and bend the con rod. (Had it happen on my old BSA A10). Also if a little water splashed in to the air intake while it was running, it could do that. 100cc more and the rod would have broken.
But in case Easy Start afficianodos are sitting back with a sigh of relief, that stuff too can break a con rod and even send it through the side of the engine. More often it blows holes through the top of the piston.
The bent connecting rod could have been caused by a hydraulic lock. When both valves are closed at the compression stroke and there is excessive liquid such as water or diesel due to faulty injector pump a hydraulic lock is created causing the con rod to bent. Also lack of oil and ecxessive carbon will cause the piston to sieze and bent the con rod. Too much "Easy Start" can cause"explossion" (instead of expansion of gases due to uniform burning of diesel inside the cylinder) which either burns a hole through the piston or or crack the head. Ethyl will ignite at a lower temperature than diesel oil and well before TDC, and in most cases the inlet valve will still be slightly open which helps to release pressure.
If only a very small amound of "easy start" is used, will assist the engine.
Reference photographs of the cylinder block -the lefthand cylinder position it appears as if there may have been a leaking head gasket on thetop left. If so is it possible that the engine could have drawn in the cooling water and caused a hydraulic pressure to the piston hence the con rod ? Just a possible suspect. It happened on my old MD1B and did the bigend shells . Coincidentally I also used Easystart due to starting difficulties then!
