Awhile ago a question was posted about cruising in Indonesian waters. I recently ran across this article (in "soundings" May 2004 edition) and thought it might be of interest to some. This is just an extract.
"THE INTERNATIONAL MARITIME BUREUAR (IMB) WHICH TRACKS PRATE ATTACKS IN THE SHIPPING INDUSTRY, RELEASED ITS 2003 ANNUAAL REPORT JAN 29. THE NUMBER OF MARINERS KILLED LAST YEAR ROSE ALSO, WITH 21 KNOWN TO BE KILLED COMPARED WITH 10 THE PREVIOUS YEAR, 71 PASSENGERS AND CREWMEMBERS WERE LISTED AS MISSING. THE NUMBER OF HSTAGES TAKEN NEARLY DOUBLED, TO 359..IMB SAYS KIDNAPPINGS FOR RANSOM ARE BELIEVED TO BE WORK OF MILITIA GROUPS IN POLITICALLY SENSTIVE AREAS...ETC. INDONESIAN WATERS CONTINUE TO BE THE MOST DANGEROUS...FOLLOWED BY BANGLADESH,AND NIGERIA. "
ACCORDING TO THE ARTICLE, NO ATTACKS WERE REPORTED IN MALAYSIAN WATERS DURING THE LAST SIX MONTHS OF THE YEAR WHICH WAS A "PIRACY HOTBED" IN RECENT YEARS, HOWEVER THERE IS AN INCREASE IN ATTACKS ON TANKERS IN THE MALACCA STRAIT AND AROUND BINTAN ISLAND WHICH INVOLVE SEVERAL BOATS ATTACKING AT ONCE.
Might due to be extra careful.

There was some previous discussion HERE of a recent incident in Venezuela.

What I'm interested in is what strategies you envisage in order to be "extra careful", short of not visiting at all?
