Announcing the East Coast 'Pirate weekend'

On 14th and 15th July in the Walton Backwaters at Stone Point

A forum weekend of family oriented fun and frivoloties for East Coasters... (and raiding parties from farther afield on summer cruises!)

Arrive Saturday morning, HW is Midday
Saturday afternoon, a treasure hunt will be in progress for the kids with a treasure map for them to follow, X will mark the spot!
Prizes will be awarded for the best pirate costume!
Saturday evening, a BBQ and bonfire on the beach, and maybe a few beach games to keep the kids entertained, and perhaps a little pirate grog for the adults!
Sunday morning, a leisurely start, and mid morning, we'll be off in tenders for a trip around the island, following the Arthur Ransome trail, although water pistols will be allowable tender equipment!
Sunday lunchtime, will be time no doubt for everyone to start leaving, hopefully tired and happy!

Remember, a Jolly Roger will be compulsory... and dressed boats will no doubt be in evidence!!!

All ages welcome /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Let me know if you are interested, so that I can get an idea of numbers, along with kids ages where appropriate (so that we can determine how hard or easy to make the treasure trail, or whether to run two different difficulties), and so that I can decide whether we need to let W&FYC know we are coming.

Cheers

Neil

Neil, fantstic suggestion !!. Dates look good and almost certain we (me, cap'n and 2 swashbucklers (8 and 10) and 1 swashbucklerette (12) can and will make it. Will check and confirm over the weekend. Looking forward to it.

I'm supposed to be taking the sea scouts sailing that saturday (inland Norfolk based sea scouts!). I may be able to get out of it as this could be ideal to get smallest son's attention (8 going on 18)! He's been on boat a few times and seems to enjoy the water taxi and the biscuit tin more than anything else!!

Tides not ideal from the south, if catch the tide from B'sea will be at Walton at LW - not got charts at work - what is CD at Walton entrance?

Pirate ship sighted.....

A Pirate ship has been sighted....

It may be taking young pirates prisoner, and transporting them round the island, but only if they can use a water pistol...

Re: Pirate ship sighted.....

Neil, you found them quicker than me!!! Anyway, appologies for the state of the mizzen, we ran out of bits of string and had to use the halyard to tie the boom to the mast. So when we came into the marina and Patrick said "now's a good time to take the mizzen down" and " just release the halyard" this was easier said than done, hence you can probably make out Chris and I tieing ourselves in knots trying to helm (hoping the tiller didn't fall to bits before we got in) and get the mess undone while Patrick barks instructions from the front like he did for the entire 20 minute trip.

Re: Pirate ship sighted.....

Its been pointed out to me, that for a true pirate weekend, someone must walk the plank.....

In a certain famous book, it was 'Uncle Jim' AKA Captain Flint, who met this sticky fate......

Do we know anyone called Jim? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Neil, confirmed /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Planning and preparations underway.

Also, I'm bored at the moment, so :

----------------------------------------------
A man walks into a pet store and says, "I'm playing Long John Silver in the play Treasure Island, and I'm looking for a parrot. Can you sell me one?" The pet store owner says, "You don't want a real parrot, it'll squawk all the time and poop on your shoulder, and what if it falls off during the play?" The man says, "Well, I want to be as realistic as possible." The pet store owner says, "I've got a stuffed parrot you can use. Can you pick it up on Thursday?"

"Oh, I can't come on Thursday. That's when I'm getting my leg cut off."

--------------------------------------

Long ago, when sailing ships ruled the waves, a captain and his crew were in danger of being boarded by a pirate ship. As the crew became frantic, the captain bellowed to his First Mate, "Bring me my red shirt!". The First Mate quickly retrieved the captain's red shirt, which the captain put on and lead the crew to battle the pirate boarding party. Although some casualties occurred among the crew, the pirates were repelled.

Later that day, the lookout screamed that there were two pirate vessels sending boarding parties. The crew cowered in fear, but the captain calm as ever bellowed, "Bring me my red shirt!". The battle was on, and once again the Captain and his crew repelled both boarding parties, although this time more casualties occurred.

Weary from the battles, the men sat around on deck that night recounting the day's occurrences when an ensign looked to the Captain and asked, "Sir, why did you call for your red shirt before the battle?". The Captain, giving the ensign a look that only a captain can give, exhorted, "If I am wounded in battle, the red shirt does not show the wound and thus, you men will continue to fight unafraid". The men sat in silence marveling at the courage of such a man.

As dawn came the next morning, the lookout screamed that there were pirate ships, 10 of them, all with boarding parties on their way. The men became silent and looked to their Captain for his usual command. The Captain, calm as ever, bellowed, "Bring me my brown pants!!

/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Can I go home yet ???

OK..... we are going to have to rearrange this for a different weekend....

Forumite, LittleKnot has kindly informed me that this is the same weekend as the OGA Swallows and Amazons weekend.... which might be highly appropriate, but will also mean a very busy anchorage...... and probable lack of enthusiasm from W&FYC if we manage to turn up in anything other than very small numbers.....

So... a new date will be forthcoming shortly... likely to be later than current date rather than earlier.... hopefully close to original planned date though....

However, the fantastic upside is that LittleKnot has also offered, subject to her availability (which I'll check with him) for none other than the fine ship 'Nancy Blackett' to put in an appearance.... for those among you who are Arthur Ransome afficiandos, you will no doubt be familar with her already, and the opportunity for the kids to have a peek through that famous porthole will be fabulous! (and some of the adults might enjoy it too /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

So apologies if this mucks up anyones plans, but unavoidable i'm afraid..

Neil

Just when I got SWMBO (feels seasick in bay window of Butt and Oyster at HW) to agree to come!

No4 son really looking forward to it. Already conducting market research into water pistols available!

Hope we can make new date but unfortunately rest of July and August are pretty booked up

It would be good if a visit from "Nancy Blackett" was possible.

I had the pleasure of sailing on her from Woverston to the Backwaters quite a few years ago.
For someone who lived by the S&A books as a youth that was one of those lifetime days.
To see her again would be wonderful.

Each time I sail past the Beach End buoy I remember the stories AR based in the area.

Look forward to the weekend If we can fit it in.
Not sure about the water gun thing.
Could spoil a pleasant trip.

The Flint Island anchorage may not be that much more crowded than usual on 14/15 July.

The OGA event is very much focussed on the large fleet of smaller boats which moor up / haul out at W&FYC on the Saturday night after their race round Swallow Island, and launch again on Sunday.

I have to say that the race is a wonderful spectacle, and you may find that it makes sense to stick to that weekend. I alerted you to the clash because you talked about visiting W&FYC and a treasure hunt.

I'm sure the OGA would like spectators / supporters, and if you were to liase with them so that picnics / treasure hunts did not wind up in the same place at the same time, then perhaps each event could add something to the other one?

Just a thought.

OK.... panic over.... we are back to the original plans.....

Weekend of 14th and 15th July...... anchorage at Stone Point, with associated festivities...

We should be treated to a display of small gaff rigged dinghies plying their way around the island Saturday morning for those that arrive in time, and Sunday they'll be doing a bit of ditch crawling....

I can confirm that the Nancy Blackett will (weather permitting) be locked in at the W&FYC basin from high water Saturday 14th to high water Sunday 15th, and will be very pleased to welcome all visitors aboard.

She will sail there from Woolverstone, and will I expect sail back on Sunday - photo opportunities if anyone's interested. Certainly the Nancy Blackett Trust always welcomes any photo's of her under sail.

Neil - it's very likely we'll be there in Santana too - at your BBQ I mean if welcome. We need to leave on Sunday in good time to get back into the Deben.

Why are the beach games to keep the kids entertained? We always enjoy boules, rounders, flying the stunt kite etc. on Flint Island, kids or no kids!
