So wherever possible we use a combination of the superb new combined CCC / Martin Lawrence / Imray pilot guides plus Admiralty Leisure Folios, where available.
But what do folks recommend for Orkney and Shetland ?

The CCC site currently states Amendments for the remaining two books of Sailing Directions, North and Northeast Scotland and Orkney Islands and Shetland Islands, are not being issued this year as a new edition of a combined book, Orkney and Shetland Islands including North and Northeast Scotland, is well in hand for publication next year. Fantastic that these rather old CCC pilot guides are being updated, but anybody know when this new combined version will be published ?

Clearly there are no Admiralty Folios (currently) beyond the Shiant Isles.
Imray C-series C68 covers the Orkneys at a scale of 1:160,000, which is OK for planning but hardly ideal for visiting islands - and no C-series charts at all for the Shetlands.
So what do folks tend to use for the northern isles without spending a fortune on masses of individual paper charts ?

NB Already got plenty of digital charts of the area on multiple independent devices (2 plotters, iPad, laptop and phone), so that side is sorted ;-)

We did a trip circumnavigating the Highlands Clockwise from the West coast to Orkney and returning through the Cally canal. I had good chart coverage at all times on both dedicated fixed plotters a Raymarine C80 (Navionics charts) and a Garmin cockpit plotter (with Garmin charts of complete UK). I also use Memory Map Raster charts on a laptop. I purchased (second hand but corrected) admiralty charts for planning, which were never used for navigation, but great for showing the big picture! I purchased the CCC pilot book this year, but it is quite out of date, so certainly worth waiting for the new edition. Not sure about Shetland though?

Anti clockwise from Peterhead back to the Clyde, via Orkney. Martin Lawrence / Garmin charts and a mix of current Admiralty paper and Imray C series charts as backup and planning. It worked well enough. Didn't do Shetland due to iffy weather. I doubt there will ever be a leisure folio for the Northern Isles.

I have the new edition for proof reading at the moment - must be finished before the holiday. I understand the intention is for Imray to print it ready for the Spring.

Any update on when this new CCC Pilot guide will actually be available? Been eagerly awaiting this but seems to be delayed - such that may be too late for this season (May / June being best for heading North)
