Malaysia charter

I've booked a charter out of Langkawi in December and would like to get my nose into a pilot book of the area.

The one that jumps out is the Imray pilot to South East Asia. Do any of you chaps have any recommendations of pilots/cruising guides to the area ?

I've only ever used the Imray one. It was ok. Why not drop an email to one of the RYA schools out there (there are only a couple) and ask their recommendations?

I was sailing there a couple of months ago. You won't be disappointed with the sailing or scenery!

We did Singapore to Langkawi and back in May with a wee jump over to Ko Lipe. Great sailing and Imray pilot was all you needed in the area. Enjoy.

If you do decide to go out with Malaysia though be prepared for some paperwork:(

Anything here any use to you, for example this one (Strait of Malacca and Sumatra) ?

????

South East Asia Pilot by Bill O'Leary and Andy Dowden isn't bad either although there are some glaring errors with regard marina facilities!

December is the NE monsoon season (november to march) expect strong winds with plenty of thunderstorms. that said great sailing around there. how long have you got?

Malaysia Charter

Just thought I'd file an update on this thread.

We had a fabulous week's sailing on a Lagoon 400S2 chartered from Dream Yacht. Superb sailing conditions (pretty much between 18 and 32 its of wind from the NE every day). We were only 4 on board, so had a cabin with en-suite each. We didn't really need such a big boat, but on the basis that we'd be at anchor every night and eating on board (most of the islands we visited are pretty much uninhabited), we thought we'd treat ourselves. I'm really glad we did. Wonderful and tranquiI, we enjoyed the unspoiled surroundings, abundant wildlife and deserted anchorages (apart from one anchorage just outside Telega marina where there were quite a few liveaboards anchored). The only downside to the experience for us was the lack of crystal clear water, and the abundance of little tiny stinging creatures when swimming (sea lice ? microscopic jellyfish ?) Bearable, no worse than mosquito bites, but it certainly made the bathing aspect less enjoyable.

I purchased the Imray SE Asia pilot before departing, and found it to be useful and pretty accurate. As Donald remarked, clearing out of Malaysia, then in and out of Thailand and back into Malaysia was a bit of a faff. Another time, I think I'd consider a one way charter from Phuket down to Langkawi, thus halving the hassle. There was one amusing incident as we waited to clear out of Malaysia at Kuah. A Dutch sailor who was also in the queue was wearing a Papua New Guinea yacht club T shirt. I struck up a conversation, telling him that one of my chefs is from PNG. He looked at me wide eyed, and said "How big is your boat, that you have more than one chef ?" I then explained that I own a pub, and the chef was nothing to do with the boat......

This was my first introduction to sailing on a large catamaran, and I can see why they have proved so popular with charter companies. As I expected, it didn't much like sailing closer to the wind than 50°, but off the wind it flew along at between 7,5 and 10kts. We all loved the comfort and space, as well as the stability, 'er indoors in particular. I suspect that we'll be chartering cats more often in the future, unless we are chartering somewhere where squeezing into busy harbours is an issue.
