Hello,

I have a few small cosmetic jobs to do on the boat and i was thinking of getting one of the (West) epoxy kits from CFS to do a small repair on the anchor locker hatch.

As i will have plenty of epoxy left i was wondering if i should get some pigment pastes and fill a few 3/4mm holes where equipment once was and some small screw holes.

Is this the best approach or should i just epoxy and dab a bit of paint on it? I'm not looking for perfection but something half decent? I've only ever used epoxy straight out of the tin.

2nd question does anyone with a Jag 25 have any idea what colours they are :)

Thanks,
Mat

I can't tell from your avatar if your boat is white but, if it is, I would just use Plastic Padding Gel Coat repair. Matching colours is not easy and it's probably best to just accept an "about right" match than spending a lot of time achieving a "completely wrong" match!

Epoxy resins are fine for structural work but if left exposed no matter what filler or pigment you use they will yellow rapidly, even in darker places like inside the anchor locker. So if you are going to use epoxy you will need to cover it with gel coat, flowcoat or paint. My last four boats have all been white and the Plastic Padding gel coat has been used to achieve almost invisible repairs on all of them, I find that it takes a year to blend in with a bit of extra polishing in the second winter after application.

That might not necessarily be the case. I know most boaty types tend to use West epoxy, there's a system by Resin Research which has no VOCs (while not recommended, it's possible to use it without protection without getting ill - I seem to recall hearing of epoxy sensitive people using this stuff - no phenol or formaldehyde) and is remarkably UV stable.

A lot of surfboard manufacturers use it, and while they tend not to be exposed to the sun all day, every day, boards made with their epoxy (generally using RR2000) stand up remarkably well to yellowing.

No connection to the company other than using their epoxy to make a couple of surfboards.
resinresearch.net for the company (all the products, safety and use sheets etc) and seabase.eu for the UK distributor.

Thanks for the info everyone. I think i will try some gelcoat repair.

A couple of small repairs have been done on it by someone else and have gone yellow, so i might have a look at fixing them first.
