Pics of the Mabel E Holland

Need you ask? A Watson 42 beach launched lifeboat with 2 x 4LW Garder diesels, the open cockpit having been enclosed by "a former owner".

The former owner was David Scott-Cowper who having been round the world twice single handed under sail, "Ocean Bound", once each way, then did it again under power in Mabel.

Not content he then added layers of ply to the hull and set off again to transit the North West passage achieving the first passage single handed and also, amazingly, the first transit of the NW Passage by ANY ship leaving and returning to the UK.

I believe he gave or sold her to a museum from where she was sold off. His book North West Passage Solo is interesting but a very odd read. It's kind of strange to read a book essenially about long ocean voyaging where, for example, the entire north atlantic takes up about a page and half and we find out almost nothing about the man himself!

Another oddity is that he is very little known, has no web presence and very few mentions. Who knows, for example, that he's back again from another marathon down to the Falklands and then up the Eastern side of the American continent and home, (how and by what route home I haven't a clue and I've been searching to find out), but home he must be because there are photos on the web of the boat back in Scotland and I hear he's bought a boatyard.

Ellen who?

I have always found that I have needed to disable my Anti-Virus / Firewall software (Norton Internet Security) to view www.boatsontheweb.com, perhaps this is your problem as well. I never got round to adding it to the list of 'trusted sites' because it is quite rare I venture onto there.

Mike.
