[PICS] Genoa boat show to the SOF

The plan was simple...drop the boat back in at Genoa, take a leisurely trip to the SOF with two friends, find winter berth, fly home.

Didn't quite work out like that because the engines wouldn't start. Having wasted a day changing filters we decided to wait another day and take in the Genoa boat show..
Very surprised at how quiet it was. Azimut weren't even exibiting this year which was a shame. Quite liked the space on the Monte Carlo 4 although some of the interior didn't look too robust.
Food and drink was very reasonable, unlike Southampton.

Left Genoa, past the Costa Concordia

Refuelled in Varazze. Very pretty looking place but didn’t stop to wander around.

Quick stop for lunch and a swim off Alassio.

One night in Marina di Imperia Porto Maurizio. Again, a lovely little place.

We snuck into Port Hercule, Monaco. Not sure if you’re supposed to but no one shouted at us. Took some photos and left.

This was bobbing around like a cork in the entrance. Looked really uncomfortable..

We eventually got a berth in St Laurent du Var Friday and Saturday (next to the world’s loudest nightclub!) and flew home Sunday morning. The weather had been perfect for the trip. We have the berth until the 20th, god knows what happens then..
We’d really like to spend the winter in France but the berthing situation is crazy

Ok, but from experience you do need to do a bit of running around to make it happen in SoF. I'd suggest coming back down ahead of your 20th deadline, and spend a couple of weekdays (ie not weekend days) going to see the various capitaneries in person and see how you get on. You are much more likely to get sorted if you visit in person.

I don't think it helped arriving early Friday evening. We phoned ahead at St Laurent and the capitanerie said to pull up at the fuel berth and wait for him to show us the berth. When we got there he was smoozing a superyacht chase boat crew, waiting for VIPs. As we waited for him a tender from superyacht Nero couldn't get in and he basically told us to FO. Later that evening he was nice as pie. I guess timing is everything.

Yep; unlucky timing with your arrival vs the tenders - but as you say, bad planning to arrive at the weekend anyway. Phoning ahead won't generally help you. Turning up in person (not necessarily with the boat) is what you need to do.

A bit shocking that Azimut weren't at their home show but interesting to see that Absolute are yet another builder to come out with a faux Trawler yacht. There are quite a few Italian builders that have spotted this niche in the market including of course Azimut and Cranchi. It surprises me that the Brit builders haven't come out with anything like this yet

Beautiful it ain't but IMHO the photo foreshortens it and the duck egg blue colour doesn't do it any favours either although it seems to be the colour in vogue at the moment. I think it mirrors the trend to SUVs in the car market. Some peeps just want a car that looks like it could handle the rough stuff even if it can't and they wouldn't want to anyway. Jury's out on these faux trawlers as far as I'm concerned; I quite like the rufty tufty styling generally myself but the builders have got to back that up with a hull that can genuinely handle a sea. One thing's for sure and that is that the traditional trawler yacht styling served up by the likes of Grand Banks and Fleming is very dated and I think there's space in the market for boats that can cruise at D/SD speeds and handle most seas like these marques but with more modern styling
