Hi,

I came to the boat with the kids (SWMBO was on a business trip) on Thursday evening with a plan to make a short 15 minute cruise to another marina. It was raining heavily but luckily there was virtually no wind as the kids slipped the bow lines on our pile mooring.

As part of the centennial celebrations of our independence, an Airshow was to take place on Friday just outside the City of Helsinki. The reason to our late cruise was to secure a berth in a prime spot in one of the marinas in the middle of the action.

Unbeknownst to me, the sea area between our home berth and the destination was closed off from public, which I can confirm first hand was very visibly policed by the numerous police, coast guard and customs boats that patrolled in the area. There wasn’t a pleasure boat in sight… No, wait…

Anyway, got to the marina unstopped and was shown a great berth. The kids did well with the buoy hook they got to use for the first time.

Weather on Friday was just fantastic. The aerial action begun at 16 hrs with motorised parachutes and progressed to heavier stuff. Lots of very exciting things to see, below are some pics from the best parts.

These guys made quite an entrance:

I tried to take a pic of our anchor light, but messed up the focus…

Another go

Their display got us gasping in awe. Just brilliant!

The fleet of Hornets in our Air Force are coming up for replacement, so I’d imagine that it wasn’t too hard to convince the various fighter manufacturers to take part in the show and display their offerings.

New breed of Hornets.

Boy were they loud.

Our own Midnight Hawks completed the evening. Lesser in numbers but still a very fine display of aerial acrobatics.

The event was massively popular and we were very lucky to have a front row seat to the whole show.

The adjacent bay was packed with boats.

And finally a spot a boat. Can anyone id this one?

Cool pics nicely shot. Thanks for posting them. :encouragement::cool:
Positively +1.

Ref. the STB, the only big RIBs I've ever seen with that sort of raised tubes design at the bow are built by Scanner.
Not sure if that's one of their models, though.

What camera/ Lens did you use Scubaman?

I have a Canon 6D body which is not very well suited for this kind of shooting, as the auto focus is pretty antique. Otherwise a nice camera and does a very good job in low light.

As for lens, I used a Canon 70-200 mm F4, which is a nice lens but the focal length is nowhere near enough for this purpose. I had to resort to massive cropping to bring subjects close enough. An extender would have made a big difference.

6D is still good for stills but the video specs are not up to today's standards. I'm seriously considering a Panasonic GH5 as a replacement but as with everything, there are compromises...

Fantastic pictures again, thanks for posting! I was there with Alexandra but we arrived late so no chance of entering your location, must have been great fun to see the show from there. It was a truly amaizing weekend on and above the waters of Helsinki. In addition to the airshow there was a Pokerrun event and the start of the Suursaari Race, an offshore regatta around the russian island of Gogland or Suursaari in Finnish (it used to belong to Finland). What made this year's regatta special was that the largest yacht that participated was the 100 foot CQS racing yacht from Australia! Here are some details of it:

Here is a video of the F18 amaizing moves filmed by by one of the daily magazines (warning, long video and some Finnish spoken in the background)

I saw some of the Poker Run boats come for refuelling at Skiffer. Very nice boats but for once their rumble sounded pretty tame compared to those jets.

Yep, a pretty action packed day and fantastic fun! My army mate was the 'sea boss' based onboard CG ship Turva. Must have been a pretty hectic day for him and the whole team organising the event.

130 000 people attended, no less.
