For all those at work Mon morning. The picture is not to make fun of an unfortunate spin twist it just happens to be the only piccie of this boat type. However as the story unfolds you will see this is a spectator sport with many thousands watching the race fromabout 50 metres away. So sorry to that unknown crew.
A friend has just given me this picture (by D. Russell) of boats in the Fremantle Harbour race. This race is held each year by invitation to those who participate in the ocean race series. So big boats.
It is a handicap start over about 1 hour each boat having a given start time. The race is 4 laps up and down Fremantle Harbour which is in itself the entrace of the Swan River to Indian Ocean.
The fastest boats take about 1.5 hours the slowest about 2.25hrs.
Anyway the photo is of a boat called a Foundation 33. I suppose you called call it one of 10 of a charter fleet owned by the local Yachting Association. However the boats are rather unique.
Farr designed 33 ft with no engine , no electrics ,no furniture, no windows just a sailing mans boat. They come with 2 jibs to choose from and spinnacker.
The 10 boats are identical and used for international match and teams racing where each skipper brings his crew and is alocated a boat. They used to charge about 200squid per day for rental but hat has possibly risen now. The fleet has been so successfull that recently it was completely replaced the old fleet being sold to Malaysians for saill training. The molds have become very popular for private owners as they really are a sweet sailing boat. They spoil the boat with luxuries and engines etc of course.
Each boat does however have A frame gear to lower the mast for those pesky bridges so the second photo is of possibly the same boat going home the next day under tow with mast down. Supported by the A frame. Many of the boats a lot bigger than this 33 lowered their mast for the race in the harbour.
Sorry about the small pix olewill
