About a couple of weeks ago Solent CG announced a hazard to small vessels, a lump of wood off Gilkicker.

I think it was the same lump we found about a mile east of Poole harbour so we told Portland CG and towed it into Poole and handed it to the harbour master.

Was a hefty lump which certainly could have spoiled someones day had they hit it!

Well done, thoughtful action.

When I read of Charlie Stock doing that (or burning it)
I thought "cannot imagine doing that myself"
but after sailing in an area for a while, it becomes "your"
area and you begin to feel responsible for it.
So good on you.

Regards Briani

Would a bit of wood drift on the tide from Gilkicker to Poole? I'd think it'just go back and forwards 2 or 3 miles?

You'd be surprised how fast things move. I heard of an incident where a fridge was spotted at St Cats and within minutes it ended up at the Needles.

Manky auld lumps of wood

Or how slow Teakie things move .. heard of one that was off St Caths and 7 hours later ir=t was still there!

Prepared a BIG clove hitch, looped it over the end and put another hitch on it.
Not a chance of hauling it on board too many hundredweights

right that does it, I'll just be a minute to fire up the laptop.
Of course Tome does have a copy of the photo's in question..but I bet he didn't tell you that..

Yes: say an average 2.5kts x 6 hours tide = 15 miles, and once out past the Needles, unlikely to go back up the Solent.

Whatever - I am glad it is not still drifting around out there.

well done ian. But i have been unimpressed at the way in whcih some people working on the watefront have treated the water almost as a tip - even some boat engineers chucking big lumps of plastic sheeting in the water.
