I am not sure about too many idevices on the Seatalk bus. Is that from the serial traffic or just from the power consumption?
On Tui we wanted to be able to power down the echo sounder in deep water (so the opposite problem), but an unpowered instrument on the bus causes intermittent communications faults on the others. Our wired autopilot remote uses a PIC and is derived from John Fic's excellent project. It is fairly easy to adapt to send other of the SeaTalk commands Thomas Knauf lists. We included a relay to disconnect the SeaTalk when the echo sounder is powered down in the same box.
Details of the project are on my blog.
Does anyone know by the way if echo sounders really do annoy whales?
