I vaguely remember gon/grad calibratinns being selectible on certain optical scale theodolites. Probably Kern. A quick Google search suggests that Zeiss produce digital instruments galibrated in gon's. But who is using this system, and why, is a mystery.

I have never heard though of latitude and longitude being referenced other than in degrees, but it would be interesting to know if the French ever attempted to be different. After all, they adhered to conical projections long after we had virtually standardised on Mercator!

Can I point out that the second IS metric. It is one of the three fundamental units that are used to define the SI metric system (the other two being the kg and metre). There are others (like the radian, steradian, Coulomb etc, but none are as important as the three fundamental units.
