In my experience it is very difficult to obtain phosphor bronze cup square carriage bolts 3/8 by about 3 ins. to fasten under water items such as seacocks. Can any body help me in my search please, and can anybody tell me if brass would be a reasonable substitute? My boat is made of Iroka and the seacocks are bronze.

Hi,

just to be clear about your other question - can you use brass? NO!! Brass is a copper/zinc alloy and undergoes dezincification in such conditions. It turns into crumbly pink stuff!

Whilst many bronzes do have zinc in them the alloys include other metals that solve the problem.

If you can't get phosphor bronze there are other good bronzes for the task. Discuss it with Moray McPhail at Classic Marine.

A sheep in wolf's clothing is manganese bronze, which is actually a brass with some manganese in it. It is also subject to dezincification like any other brass. Brass should be restricted to sacrificial rubbing strips on dinghy keels, ship's bells, galley drawer pulls and the like. Nothing structural.

You can get the bolts & nuts for Blakes seacocks. Bolts, cup square head or countersunk, are available either M8 x 75mm or 3/8 Whit x 3".
pm me if interested.

I recently obtained some of these for my seacocks from Anglia Stainless ( Combwich marine) 01359 251414 you will find that they are 5/16ths unc but are a perfect fit in the blakes plates. At £1.70 each much cheaper than some Chandlers wanted to rip me off.
