Have one of these driving a satisfactory nav system with Yeoman and Autohelm.

Fine until just now. Setting up for early morning departure and it has decided that the month and year are Nov 02. Otherwise everything fine.

Any insights into what is happening. Should I dust off the spare GPS?

I have one fitted on my boat and manual here. Have you tried turning power off to unit and re-powering as a re-set? Have you also set the alarms for battery and antenna which might indicate if these could be an issue? Mine has been totally reliable except when battery needed replacing, which is easy to do yourself. Let me know if you want me to look anything up in the manual for you. Hope you resolve the issue for your early start.

I've got a Mk6 A-P, and had to give it a "Bad" (Good, Bad, Ugly) start this year to clear and get a "new" almanac. It took almost half hour to get it, but came good with all satellite data.
