I bought one of these in Maplins today to allow me to wirelessly connect my iPhone to the boats stereo via its Aux input using Bluetooth..

It comes with a 240v switch mode charger sending 9VDC to the device, but doesn't state what the input voltage tolerance is acceptable to the device itself. I've checked the website but that just shows the same details as the included owners manual.

So do I just plug it in to the boats 12 - 14 VDC supply and hope it will survive, or simply install a 9v regulated power supply unit in the supply wires. ? Current draw is only 300 ma. Ebay offers plenty of suitable regulators.

Personally, I'd sort a regulator to feed it 9V.
50% more volts is a bit much imho, quite likely to at best shorten the life of various components.

I have ordered one from Ebay. Cheap as chips, and will simply wire into the supply. I have just plugged the device in at home to test it and it is as clear as a bell, and works up to 10m distance from the phone.

Doesn't the phone/tablet have a headphone output? If the boat stereo (car radio?) has an aux input, why not connect directly to that rather than via bluetooth? A bigger problem is that many car radios annoyingly DON'T have an aux input :(

Yes there is an Aux input, I wanted to avoid the wire link to my phone, which means I can control the music from anywhere in the cabin. I already have a device that transmits on a selected FM frequency, but there is often some interference.

IMO you should take it back for a refund, and instead use one of these and one of those USB power adaptors made for a car lighter-socket.

I think Maplins have a good return policy, so you'll save about £15 doing it this way, and you'll know your 12v -> 5v adaptor will have no trouble with 14v when you're charging.

Indeed they do ! Will now order the EBAY one - thanks for the link.

Arrived yesterday tested it today. Excellent bit of kit, set up and working within 1 minute, and it runs from its own battery for 8 hours between charges, so no need for a dedicated power supply either. Comes with a short 5v USB to miniature USB lead.

Highly recommended for anyone requiring a clear and simple Bluetooth link from their phone to their music system.

You can buy a similar system intended for use in a car and powered for a cigarette lighter socket or USB adapter.
Search for Himbox HB01.
