Has anybody converted their obsolete Philips AP Decca Navigator to GPS? I have been told that it can be done. I wonder whether it is worth it? if you have had it converted, where did you find the conversion kit? I have searched the net to no avail.

We did check it out and as far as I can remember, it would have cost more than a new mid-range GPS

We binned ours

Its a totally different system working at different frequencies. Possibly the only bits you would be able to re-use are the case and screen. And even then, they would be old and tired. But why bother with gps available at £100 or so?

Its a bit like putting and engine in your old horse driven buggie. better to buy a car.

What about the active aerial? Could it be reused? My understanding is it is a longwave antenna. Is there any possibility it could receive Navtex connected through a laptop with appropriate software?

If memory serves you can run Mk4 and 5 AP navigators on GPS signals. It basically involves feeding gps data into the navigator via the nmea ports. You will need a 12 channel receiver called an AP Survivor which you should be able to get via your chandler or Comar services on the Isle of Wight
