Phil Harris - MFV Cornelia Marie

That is sad news indeed, I was a fan.
I don't think anybody will deny that his lifestyle had a lot to do with his untimely death.

RIP Phil

Not that old at 53. They are all 'big' characters and seem as tough as old boots.

Discovery has a page here on Capn' Phil with some nice words from his kids. His personal website is down for the moment.

My money was on Sig Hansen, if anybody.

I worked around Phil for the last 25 years. Never on the same boat, but in the fleet. Tied up to him many times. Anymore, we have to ask permission from the Hollywood boats if we can tie up....:-)
I switched out of crabbing to trawling in the mid 80's. Phil was one of those guys that always reminded you, you were not in a normal business here. I have always contended there are like 3 kinds of fishermen in Alaska. The guys who's father and grandfathers fished, Norwegians and Portuguese like that, the natives, the locals, it is in their life blood..... The guys who would have been hell's angels if they did not fish. To them it was one long party....smashing every rule and getting rich, and blowing it all the way. And a few guys who were smart and could have done anything, but chose fishing as a business opportunity.
I think Phil was one of the Hell's Angel. He was a character. We are losing a lot of our characters up here. The story's are unbelievable how crazy of stuff they would do, sometimes for fun, sometimes to survive.
R.I.P. Phil, sorry to see you go so soon. Story's will be told and you will be remembered.
This is a photo of the old (really old) Russian Church that all fishermen in Dutch Harbor go by on the way out, and on the way in. Thought it was appropriate for this.
