Phantom dinghy, any good?

Moi ! I am WAS a modest "professeur" then saw the light, since when I have been too dazzled to make the most of my considerable talents, which include humility and moderatio in omnibus.

Keep going Chris, XX coming up !

Hmmm I'm 6 ft and 12 stone with a dicky back and an aversion to getting wet. It's starting to look a bit marginal. However the mast and main may be just the job for my trimaran project! He he /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Go on, buy it!!

My first boat was a Phantom (sail number 95 I think). I was 15 years old, weighed nothing like 12 stone and loved every second. All I can recall is screaming along, taking out Lasers for breakfast and getting very wet. As a tenager it was about as good as it gets... but not so sure the old body would take it now!

At last a topic on which I can speak with personal experience AND some authority*.

In essence, the boat weighs about the same as a Laser, but has 50% more sail area. As it has no trapeze or sliding seat, they are really hard work upwind in anything over F3, esp for those of you who weigh 12 stone. In light airs you will be pleased with the way they perform, but in the heavy stuff, you just won't go out ( once you have learned how wet you will get when it all goes pear shaped ). Bad backs are not recommended.

So my recommendation would be not to but it, unless you are buying parts for another project.

By the way, the new foam sandwich boats are fab - well built, strong and down to weight. I am afraid you won't get one of those for £100!!

I see that your advice is well qualified.
Our problem is the lake is very squally and as I have a dicky back and the previously mentioned (by Cardinal Mark) fairly old body I may buy it for the rig, sell the trailer and burn the boat.
