No idea why he hit it but I bet his P45 is in the post this morning. We've all done stupid things in our boats, most of us get away with it, he was unlucky and I feel sorry for the poor bastard

The door locking theory is quite possible, it's happend to me twice. Both locked in and locked out.

Reminds me of the 'true' story about a MiddleEastern airline jet mid flight, when the captain had left the flight deck to talk to the passangers in first class, and much against procedure, the first officer needed a pee, so left the flight deck also, but left the door ajar.

A bout of turbulance closed the flight deck door whilst both pilots were out!

Anti-terrorism strategy dictated that it should be impossible to open the flight deck door from the outside, so they had to use a fire axe to break back in!

I have recently taken delivery of the new Phantom 40 and the door will only lock if the key is turned once the door has shut so I doubt if that's what caused the error.

The fire axes are kept IN the flight deck.

It (actually) happened about 20 years ago, so all the paran.. stuff about sharp objects didn't figure. I guess an axe was standard fitment around the emergency exits at one time.

Makes you wonder what you'd do for a bandage these days if you crashed in the wilds, nothing with you to cut up the womens skirts into strips any more!

Fairline listening here, or is Telmate correct?

Ha! perhaps fairline do read this forum. There were posts on this a few years ago. Telmate, we have a 1999 model 42 and on that you can turn the lock on the inside to the locked position, then step outside and slam lock the door, with the keys inside.

Or..... check yours Telmate. Is your post actually correct? Yes, if you are outside you need the key to lock it. But on the inside there is no keyhole, just a twist knob to lock it - have you tried twisting that to the locked position, then slam locking the door? If it locks, then beware! Do as we do and keep a spare key hidden somewhere in the lazarette so you can get in if you're locked out! This was learned the hard way.

It's happened to me three times now. First time, we were visiting Sutton marina in the center of Plymouth. I just shut the door whilst pottering about. Tutts having gone shopping for the day. Well I looked around for open windows. None dam it. But there was a porthole open. Right I thinks. Find a scrawny little kid. So asked around, got some very funny looks, but was informed that they all went back to school yesterday. Hmmm. So, not to be outdone. I took a walk round the Barbican, looking for suitable aplicants. Spied a group on a corner, so walked up to them with my perculiar request. Well next minute they were running like hell down the road, turning and making some sort of jestures!! So beaten I ambled back to the marina. Theres two little erchins leaning over the fence. Looking like they were extras out of the film Oliver. Proper rough little kids, like they used to be. In the end they struck a deal. One would go through window if I took them fishing. So I pushed him through the bog porthole. Watching him carefully as to not nicking half the contents of boat before arriving at back door. But all seemed well so far. The kids had a big bag of fish that they said a fisherman had given them and that they had been out fishing loads of times and were quite expert. Tutts was back by this time so off we goes on our fishing expidition. For some unknown reason, as we got close to the lock and swing bridge, the two hero's hid under the table?? Anyway off out into the sound and stopped to fish. It was a bit lumpy. Well they had not got a clue. Asking me to do everything for them. Eventually one of them turned green. So we headed for the shelter of Cawsands bay.

How about I cook some of your fish says Tutts. Oh yes we love fish. They said. Well I dont think they'ed had fish in there lives. Both as sick as dogs after a mouth full. Bet they had some adventures to tell there mates about on there return though..../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I would check it very carefully, I have a 2003 Princess and my saloon door has a key lock for both inside and outside locking.

With the key removed on occassions the door will 'auto' lock. This happens especially if the door slams shut when at anchor and we catch a swell - the second / third doors can be 'locked' open but severe motion will cause them to jump their catches. I now ALWAYS keep the key in my pocket when O/B. and only leave it in the lock when sleeping below.

Well it has beed discust before and many have commented on it. Trouble is, it does not happen often. So you tend not to be on your guard.
