Phantom 40 Extractor fan

I have recently bought a 2004 Fairline Phantom 40 and in the galley area there is a double switch one switch operates the lights in the galley but the other one does not seem to do anything,

I thought it might be for the extractor fan but when pressed it does nothing and I have looked up inside the extractor with a torch and I cannot see anything in their ??????????????

I have removed the switches and they both have wires coming from them so I am confused as to what this switch does

can anyone tell me if the boat should have an extractor or not, also there is a moulding on the exterior hull that looks like it should have one but this may just be like it on all models in case one is fitted at build.

if this switch is not for the extractor what else could it be for

Maybe its a dimmer switch
Have a look at the wiring diagram in the owners manual

Fwiw, there are also two switches on my p43 and the other one does operate the fan.

a quick check with a meter will tell you if power is provided to the switch, and then it's don your deerstalker and track the wires to their destination.


BTW

Have you got a Boat Manual with the new one ? One which gives you all the layout of wires and pipes. I seem to remember suggesting this as a Useful Item when you first joined the forum.

The second switch is very often used for courtesy low level light or rope lights under the cupboards over the worktops in the galley.

If there is nothing in the extractor tube leading upwards to the deck vent, then there is no extractor. The usual type has a 5 position remote switch, normally hidden in a cabinet above a worktop. Centre is off and there are 2 speeds for suck and blow.
They are not very effective and make an irritating whirring sound.

I replaced mine with a 12 volt computer cooling fan. It works twice as well and is virtually silent.

Only sucks though... Bit like an Electrolux!

I didn't have this boat when I first joined the forum

not come across a wiring manual but will have a good look through all the paper work when I go down on wednesday

yes one of the switches does indeed operate the low level lights above the worktop but its the other switch which does nothing

Terry I could ask Fairline or indeed one of their agents (although they were not very helpful when I could not turn the hot water on the 1st weekend I spent on the boat all they needed to tell me was that there was another switch hidden under the lift up cupboard under the step into the galley) but I find their is normally a fellow forumite who usually knows the answer and can be more helpful than the agents

Yep, just on/off. It's an identical rocker switch to the one for the lights. I would assume yours is for the same purpose if a fan is fitted. The Fairline manual on mine has a good wiring diagram for everything that should help you forward.

Though as RogerRat mentioned it's not very powerful so we never use it. Opening the side window above and suitable portholes depending on the wind direction does a far better job.

I know this question was posted a while ago but I'm not sure it was fully answered, so it may help someone who has a similar problem.

I've got a 2007 build Phantom 40, bought in 2009, and have many such queries/anomalies most of which I usually get answered or work it out somehow! This galley fan question was one of them! I'm speaking from memory as I discovered the problem a few years ago.

The switch to the left in the galley does work the fan, but when switched on I found it was barely rotating! Eventually I found a control box behind the fridge top-right ( you need to draw out the fridge - 2 screws hold the fridge top frame in, open the door to see them). This control box is exactly the same as the fan controls in the main and guest heads. i.e. it has 2 forward and 2 reverse speeds. In addition, I'm pretty sure there is a 24v connection, and in my case I'm sure the 12v supply was connected to the 24v in on the box. Hence the fan was operating painfully slow!

I decided to remove the control box totally, so the 12v feeds the fan directly. It's a faster speed now, thought still not perfect. I'm wondering if the fan itself is rated for 24v so at 12v its running at half the speed. However I've never been able to get to the fan to check it out - if anyone knows how I'd be interested.

Incidentally, I've also removed the fan control boxes in each of the heads, so those fans run directly from 12v. I've never needed to run at slow speed or reverse the fan direction, and those fans are now more efficient. The control boxes themselves are lossy and consume power so I felt it's better without.

Hope this helps someone out there.
