Used to have a Labrador who went everywhere with us but prevented many hops across the channel so I decided not to replace her but my daughter is going on relentlessly about a pet.

Thinking something small enough to take with us in a bowl or cage

gold fish
rabbit

Anyone have any experience and how do they handle rough weather ?

daughter never around when packing up to leave so I envisage them getting left behind on the boat for a week or two, if I remember correctly hamsters have little food pouches which could be handy in such emergences .

Suggestions appreciated.

I have a cat and a parrot. I never have any trouble with either but to be on the safe side I dont normally take both at the same time

I have not had any mice on board since getting the cat.

Please tell me youre joking about hamsters. If youre serious... They DON'T store food in their mouths for days on end lol, only for hour or so. They DO need daily fresh water and food. Would you REALLY forget to take them home with you??
Rabbits chew everything and anything and will sh*t everywhere.
Anything in a bowl (of water??) on a boat is gonna slop about and leave more water inside the boat than in the bowl.
Is this a serious question???
Can't think of any animal other than a dog thats gonna be suited to boating other than on a canal tbh.
How about a snake in a vivarium ;)
P.S. A rabbit couped up in a small hutch will not be a happy bunny and WILL stink the place out.

My cats love the boat and often come with us on trips. Rabbits will chew things especially cables etc.

Here are my cats enjoying the boat....

can see the headline... tragic loss, mobo sunk, all crew survived but one missing... many years later missing crew member found alive and well............ swimming in the solent;)

I reckon a goldfish will do ok on a boat

hi its dakas daughter and no my dad was not being serious about a hamster storing food in their mouth, it was a joke and it would not get left. But to me it seems like everyone has pets on their boats apart from us am i right or is their anyone else that doesnt have pets?

Hi Dakas daughter. Soo glad he was joking about the hamster :):). I only ever see a couple of people with dogs on their boats, it looks to me like loads of people don't have them. We have a pug but we don't bring him with us very often coz it gets too hot for him :(.

Giant African Land snails will do you, but do make sure there is a clip-on lid on the tank, if they go for a walk they are likely to eat all your charts - well at least the paper ones, the garmin ones will probably be OK. Feed & clean 'em once a month or so. Very affectionate & will crawl all over you. Don't worry, the slime brushes off when it dries.

Philliz take a parrot (Jaffa) & a dog (Jim) with them all the time. jaffa makes more sense than Phill most of the time. :D

These little guys come on about 35% of our trips, not the long ones, but most local weekend hops.

We anchor a lot so there is always and early morning and late evening run ashore or to an island to let them have a "run" about

Our Westie is more than happy traveling at sea, this picture taken last week when cruising at 20 knots, hes also happy on long car journeys to/from boat.

Only most of the time eh, quite a compliment!

Jaffa is an African Grey, he's very good on the boat, never seems bothered how bouncy it is, I suppose it's a bit like sitting in a tree on a windy day to him. However, they are a big commitment. Life expectancy is similar to ours (although Searush is getting close to his time if he keeps it up! ;)), and they do need quite a bit of attention and stimulation.

I for one don't.
Incidentally, I just had a guest onboard who brought her golden retriever.
Lovely animal indeed, trained for sea rescue and always responding to any request of her owner.
She definitely deserved some space in the video I posted in this other thread.
That said, I didn't change my mind re. long stays of pets onboard - i.e., thanks but no thanks.

Hi Daka's daughter,

Having cats on board is not very common, people seemed surprised we take ours with us. Most of the boats around us don't have pets either.

thank you

hi its daka 's daughter , thank you for all your reply 's and all the pictures of everyone 's pets are really cute.:);):)

I have had my Amazon for coming up for 40 years and he's still going strong. Gets a bit sh*gged out after a long squawk though....
