Am I getting nasty, or what?

Lately, I rarely had time to log onto the forum.
Therefore, I just surfed around, looking for something new to learn - which I always found, in the past.
One criteria I'm using to select the threads to go through is the number of posts, so this seemed an interesting one.
The starting post, based on facts and figures, gave at least some food for thought.
But after that, the only lesson to be learned is that everyone pretend its own choice to be the best!
C'mon, forumites, you can do better that that!
Or maybe, if nobody else had such impression of useless chat, am I just getting worse with the age, contrarily to good wine?

Mmmmm, just wondering what your contribution has been, are you a giver or just a taker /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Am I getting nasty, or what?

Come on sir, if you read the post closely you wil in fact see clearly that everyone is in pretty close agreement on things. However, like all good IT projects, it is clarity over the scope that is causing everyone to go round in little circles.
However you are correct to deride us - if you look real hard over the last 14 months you will find 5 nearly identical threads to this one..........sad eh?

Re: Am I getting nasty, or what?

Problem is that different people, who obviously haven't read or digested the previous posts, bring up the same tired arguements, which mean that everyone has to argue the same points all over again

If we don't argue those points, many lookers on will believe them to be fact.

Re: Am I getting nasty, or what?

Didn't want to deride anyone, really.
But many recent threads - not only this one - gave me the impression that the overall "quality" of the forum debates is declining. And I just wondered if anyone else had the same perception.
BTW, also this subject was already raised in the past, as far as I remember.
Now, that is sad... what else should we invent?
Maybe we just need (at least, I do for sure) more daycruising and less ...night-keyboarding!

Re: Am I getting nasty, or what?

The more times a subject is brought up, the less the quality of the debate, as everyone has been through it before. Several times. Most can't be bothered to contribute, or their contributions are short and terse.

Re: Am I getting nasty? No just learning.

<<<But many recent threads - not only this one - gave me the impression that the overall "quality" of the forum debates is declining>>>

Not declining at all. What is happening is that as you read more and more of threads your knowledge is improving. So when the subject comes up again in another future thread you find that you understand it better and wonder why it is that others don't and need to discuss it.

Time will come when you know it all, like some of the rest of us, and everything is blindingly obvious. Of course, when that happens there will be nothing on the forum that will give you the impression of "quality" at all, so you will be quite happy to discuss parrots, the merits of petrol engines in supertankers, whether auto gyro propellers are better than free wheeling submarine ones, and the like, too.

Re: Am I getting nasty, or what?

I believe many have that perception - and both BrendanS and Mainly steam explain it's cause well.

Now maybe we need a good thread on the efficiency of push me pull you drives with 2 duo prop arrangements - and how we can get Volvo to bring one to the market?

Thank you!

John, believe it or not, your post showed me the light.
Maybe, through this constant increase of knowledge, we're on our path to the Buddha lifestyle.
And in any case, it is nice to believe that!
I mean, much better than the feeling below, which I'm afraid to have slipped into sometimes!...

Re: Am I getting nasty, or what?

The sad thing is, the regulars here have learnt a great deal from the forums.

I think I've just learnt that I need to pass some of that learning on, and treat each new thread as if I've never seen it before, even if it is going over old ground.

I don't think you'll ever get the spirirt of the old posts, unless the newcomers are willing to challenge, which is difficult as the old timers here rule the roost (and I'll now concede that I'm one of them..eventually)

So, challenge of today. Anyone got any 'stupid' questions they wanted to ask, but were frightened to? I just blatted through, you should to, and just ask them.

You'll be given a 10 post amnesty to ask anything you want before the forum starts questioning your sanity (everyone else, respect the amnesty)

FAQ that puts many newcomers off. Yes, we are real, we do own boats on the whole (some are retired, some are between boats, but have a huge amount of experience). We often meet up, and many here meet regularly, so that puts paid to that myth.

So, if you've been lurking and watching, just post a Hi to this thread. You won't get hurt, and we need some new blood

Re: Thank you!

Yes, one thing about the Buddha lifestyle it does give one the excuse needed to contemplate ones navel. And I always find having an excuse is better than not having one!

Pleased to hear from another Garfield fan - great cartoon character. My place of worship is http://www.garfield.com.

Re: Thank you!

Couldn't agree more. BTW, that site is where my picture came from.
Jim Davis must really be a nice fellow, I don't know of any other cartoonist who makes his work freely available on the net.
Well, maybe the fat cat earned for him enough money...
Here's another nice one, on the same subject.
Cheers, Mario.

Re: Am I getting nasty, or what?

Brendan, this is honestly not having a go, but as a relative newcomer to the forum, I look at your biog and wonder why I should take any of your feedback seriously.
I am sure you have a wealth of knowledge, but there is a credibiliity issue, as whereas the regulars may know how experienced you are, newbies won't have a clue.
Totally agree about repetitive posts, but there is so much history on the forum that it is trick to zone in on just what you want and easier to re ask the question. Perhaps some FAQ's can be repackaged into folders - KIM.

Re: Am I getting nasty, or what?

That bio only went on a few days ago in a bored moment.

Previous one was quite factual.

Why trust any bio? you can fill in any old tosh that may or may not be true.
