Morning all,
has anyone done a petrol to diesel conversion on a 7.5/8m sports cruiser before. Is it a tough job if at all possible. looking for any advice about this.

It will probably be cheaper and less hassle to sell the petrol boat and buy a diesel variant.

That wasnt the question. I realise that, just wanted to know if anybody has successfully attempted this. If you have a good boat with a duff petrol engine that you have bought at a steal and you have a nice kad32 for the right money to put in it.

Yes. Yes, more than you can imagine.

Advice, depends on your motivation for the swap.

If you like a project then its fun. If you want to save money, forget it.

If you do do it, make sure your donor engine and drive comes with absolutely everything you need. Brackets or bits of exhaust or whatever rack up many thousands very easily.

Edit OK you have a nice engine. What else do you have? Outdrive, outdrive gimbal, outdrive back plate, outdrive lift motor, all hydraullic pipes, rams good? engine cush drive good? (£1k+ for that if it's gone) engine mounts, strainers, fuel filter, does it fit (measure 3 times) does it foul the steering gear (a swap to hydraulic as I had to do is another £k gone). Oh, and fit loads of soundproofing before you put it in. And a bigger battery.

That's the sort of reply I was looking for. I dont know about half the stuff you are talking about but it looks like you do. I'm just learning. Thank you.

Not sure if diesel conversion is worth it, but given the low running costs of big modern outboards, they may be a better choice.

Hi did the same a few years ago on a fairline holiday took out a v8 petrol and replace with a kad32 made a very nice boat money wise near enough broke even when I sold it 3 years later but did all the work myself

Bit harsh.

Of course you can put a diesel engine in a boat. The common sense question is always how much are you willing to spend. Most times even if the boat was free, you are unlikely to see your money back.

What happened to those VW/ Audi V6 3.0 litre diesels that were going to be offered a few years ago to the marine marketplace ? Did it not work out ?

if you was more polite you might get more answers

This has been covered a few times in the boating magazines, might be worth looking up in some of them, couldn't tell you exact dates.
I guess biggest problem is finding a suitable engine unless you buy new.
Good luck

I am polite, just to the point and even though I'm new to the boating world I am not an idiot. If you haven't got anything constructive to say don't bother replying. On the other hand you may have some great stuff that you would like to share. I've viewed loads and loads of different threads on the forum and the majority are great but there are a few people that are right up themselves and seem to enjoy trying to make others look a little daft. Shame.

Great response thank you.

Blimey. Has The Donald swapped golf for boating?

Hyundai Seasall make a direct sterndrive compatible Diesel engine replacement , I agree that it will not be economically worthwhile unless you are very attached to your current boat

A little inspiration

Nice video, nice engine and nice boat.
I still don't have a boat, just searching around for ideas and possible projects really. But this project does sound a little to involved for my zero experience in boating. Its just interesting to know what other folks have done in the past.

I seem to recall that they became Mercruiser diesels. In other words the current Mercruiser 3.0 diesel is that Audi engine.

I may be many things but right up myself isn't one of them.

If it was a cost effective or easy job then many more people would be buying cheap petrol boats and converting them to diesel.

It isn't cost effective or easy. Hence my answer to your question.
