I need 30cm removed from my alloy petrol tank to make room for my diesel engine.
A new tank is very expensive - does anyone know anywhere that will alter the old tank which is in perfect condition?

If the tank has had petrol in it any welding will be quite difficult to do safely. You miht be able to purge it with an inert gas but I think many fabricators might be reluctant to do it. I don't know of anyone but have you looked at any classic car restoration magazines - they might have fabricators.

It can be done. Basically steam clean the thing. degrease it, fill it with water for a couple of weeks. Then just to make sure take it somewhere away from the general populace and buildings. Open up the inpection cover and get some brain dead person to drop a burning rag into it. If they walk away unharmed and breathing you should be able to weld it!
I've done it in the past. Had a couple of changes of underwear ready though!

Brain dead..
Explains why my neighbour did some tank welding himself.. At home, in a detached house all of 5ft from mine. I wasn't a happy bunny.

Regards

Richard.

Have a look at the racing car specialists, especially Stock Car and other short circuit tank manufacturers.

Petrol tanks must be left open to the air for at least 24 hours before undertaking any welding. Filling with water or other liquid only prevents petrol vapour from escaping, and petrol from evaporating. They are filled with water while welding to prevent any vapour from the seams, caused by heating the tank, from expanding to an explosive mixture.
