Petrol or Deisel

Have you considered something like a Merry Fisher 805?

They are more expensive but at least with the sort of boat you don't need to be going fast all the time as you do in a 25ft sports cruiser. This sort of boat only has two speeds, very slow or bloody fast and on the plane.

I have a 24 ft Larson with a 5.0 Volvo petrol, does about 8 gph at 20 knots with a clean bottom. Next boat to be a single engine semi displacement boat like the one mentioned above.

Oh i dont know. We cruise with a whole range of other boats and can manage with the slow ones (up to 6 knots) and the quicker ones (20-30 knots) with no problems. The speeds in the middle we never use as it is just a waste of fuel. At displacement speeds a diesel cruiser will be quite frugal as well.

Well you either want to get to your location quickly or slowly. Nobody ever wants to get to their location averagely, whats the point in that.

When you go to sea, sometimes you would like a nice slow cruise instead of going fast.

But going along on a small sports boat isn't very nice at slow speeds and is over too quickly when going fast!

Didnt find it a problem when we had to slow down and wait for one of our flotillia, just left her in tick over and she picked her own route through the waves. Same when we went fishing. Yes they roll a little more than when speeding along but you are at sea. Some movement is to be expected.

Okay then, all small sports boats apart from S23's.

Whats that, your boat that wont move on water?

This is silly. I don't to get into a row, but you do tend to think S23s are the best boats and are great for everything.

My point is, all small planing boats tend to roll a lot and are a pig to control at sea unless they are on the plane. Semi displacement boats don't do that so much so you can pick speeds that suit your mood rather than needing to be going fast.

Of course the S23 is the best boat, much the same as your caravan (merry fisher) will be when you get it and your current boat was when you bought it. Everyones boat is the best boat at some point, why else would you own it?
