PETROL FUEL ADDITIVES

Come on, there MUST be someone out there who knows of an additive to put in petrol fuel tanks whilst laid up over winter! Our boat looks like having about 40-50 gallons of petrol left in the tank when lifted out soon and we need to come up with an additive which will cope with water, due to condensation - owing to tank only being about half full - (and NO, we can't afford to fill the tank!!) and also the various other nasties which afflict fuel left for longish periods. All SENSIBLE solutions gratefully received. As I pointed out in an earlier posting, the additive made by Starbrite, particularly for water in gasoline, has been withdrawn from the market for some reason.
 
There used to be an addative a few years ago called Stabil. Not seen it for quiet a few years now, came from U.S I think. It would keep petrol "fresh" for upto 6 months. Ask Depsol about Soltron, he says it can be used in petrol engines, dont know if it prolongs its life tho.

Yeah! I know its running rough, but your lucky its running at all!!
 
Thanks guy's but WHAT is Soltron and WHERE do we get it from??? Or the other product, or ANY product, for that matter???

Humble apologies, had not read your posting when I asked where to obtain the Soltron. Many thanks for your help and will now look up the website you so kindly gave me.
 
Take a visit to your local Mercury/Mercruiser dealer and purchase a bottle of Gasoline stabilizer, Part no: 92-817529A12. As for Soltron, it got a crap review in this months Motor Boats Monthly, and I think it's for diesel only. But what do I know.

As for the Starbrite product, I saw a bottle of it in a chandlers in Poole last weekend, they also had a bottle of Diesel additive.
 
Why bother? Water will condense out of air on the tanks sides. Your petrol won't go off in a matter of months. When you re-float drop in a 5 gallons or so of "fresh" petrol and that should be enough. Course if the lay-up is longer than seven/eight months you might need to think about something. I'd also add a cleaner Redex Detergent or the like with the fresh petrol to ensure no gumming up of the works occurs.

So you unscrew this, and put it safely here, then oopps...

Having had loads of petrol boats in the past never ever bothered to add any thing.Just a quick check of tank to ensure no water before first trip out.Only time I ever came to a halt through water was middle of season after collecting a gallon or two from a marina which will remain nameless.First and only time filled up from boatyard prior to that and eversince have always used local filling station/jerry cans.

Just hold tight dear it will not be so rough when we get round the corner,trust me.
 
Your right it did get a crap review but you will have to see why if you look on prev thread about MBY fuel additive test.

Needs more than a tear drop of enzyme to activate in the fuel as it is only present in 1ppm.

Soltron wil raise the combustability of the fuel but I have no proper evidence that it will prolong it.

Did they add Soltron in the same ratio in the test as it would be used in a fuel tank? If it's 1ppm in fuel in the tank, it would have the same effect as 1ppm in the test
 
You have to stop comparing the enzyme with a biocide. The amount in a shock dose was 440 ppm of Soltron then take into account that it is 1 ppm of enzyme that is not enuf to multiply in the little bottle that they had to work properly.

See prev post for full details. Fact is it clears bug sludge and everything else that contaminates your tanks and there are enuf people on here that have done it for evidence.

Errr if it worries you that much why don't you syphon it all out and put it in your car? Or mine if you like. Then next year fill up with nice new fresh petrol and away you go.

Oh and as long as you're filling my car up, I think BarryD finds the cost of boating a bit on the expensive side and could do with a gallon or two as well.
 
Sorry, but I think the best additive you can put in is..........PETROL.

The main causes of degradation are, condensation, oxidation and loss of light ends through evaporation. All of these can be minimised by filling the tank to the brim. That's what I do and never had any problem, OK might cost a bit to fill up, but you'll use the stuff next year, think of it as an investment, might be £5 a litre by the spring.

Many thanks to all out there who have replies to my posting about additives. I now have a list of makes/brands to choose from, decisions, decisions!!!
Unhelpful advice however from Colicholic - how big does he think our car fuel tank is??? !!!
