I'm sure it works one way, but which is it?

Can a fuel can thats had petrol in it be then used ok to carry Diesel, without ruining the fuel?
Or is it the other way round?

Cheers

Alistair.

If the can is emty, no problem. The fuel roadtankers do it all the time.

But i thought Diesel was an Oil, so would it not always leave a residue in the can, which wouldn't be good when mixed with petrol and then used in a motor?

Many moons ago I always mixed a couple of gallons of petrol in my diesel truck during very cold weather - stops the diesel freezing (waxing)

I think the only objection is that if there's still some petrol about your can of diesel will have a highly flammable vapour with it. Probably not going to be a problem 999 times out of a 1000 but you don't expect diesel to have that and if there's much your diesel tank could be similarly affected.

years ago I used to get a vehicle allowance that included fuel[petrol] costs .I used to "borrow" diesel from the machines I serviced and put approx 5lts petrol to 1/2 liter diesel never had any problems with running ,starting ect.

Thanks all for the advice.

I'm busy getting ready for my hoilday, juggleing jerry cans, with fuel for the Boat, Generator, and the heating.

Cheers All.

If you get petrol in your diesel it lowers the flashpoint. This is normally about 120 deg F, so in normal weather conditions your diesel doesn't give off explosive vapour. Petrol's flashpoint is well below freezing, so it always gives off inflammable vapour. Petrol vapour has a lower explosive limit of only 1.4% in air which means a very small spillage can lead to a very big bang in small enclosed spaces like a boat so treat it very carefully.
