If I have this right, you can only use approved carriers and not your own boat to enter a pet back into UK?

Yes that's correct. Pets also have to receive tick and flea treatment at the vets, date and time stamped into passport. This treatment has to be, from recollection with my pooch 4 years ago, no less than 24 hrs and no more than 48 hrs before entering the UK.

In addition pet has to be in an approved container and you can't take them on a ferry as a foot passenger. The ferry company in my case had accepted booking as foot passenger then denied boarding which left pooch wnd me stranded in St.Malow whilst Boss sorted it out (already sailing towards UK) resulting in yet another vet visit as we were outside of the time slot of treatment.

Not my fondest travelling memory...

Hi,

the rules have changed a bit... u only need a worming tablet 1 to 5 days before, vet still needs to sign passport. However there is a very nasty tick that can kill dogs, and UK tick treatments don't work, we get some "high power" stuff from vet and apply once a month...

With regards to travel back to UK, we have found the best way is on the Tunnel, not the Eurostar, dogs are not allowed... we get someone to drive though pick the dog up then get the next trail back... I belive you can do the same in a ferry, as long as dog stays in the car

All in all fairly stress free... :-)

A lot of the visiting Dutch and Belgians seemed to be ignoring the rules this year, lots of boats coming from Boulogne et al with dogs and cats aboard.

There doesn't seem to be any meaningful enforcement in marinas.

Dogs are allowed with foot passenger on Stena line into Harwich, must go into onboard kennel for journey.

Brought a dog into the uk in my private vehicle last monday aboard p&o from calais.

Must admit that once the passport is obtained and up-to-date the process is slick and simple.

The only time you need to use 'special procedures' is when you check in to the port. You have to use the one check in window that has the chip scanner.

I'd check with border agency to see if you can do it, you may find somewhere where they can scan a pet in.
