Pet hates ? (contributions from raggies welcome)

People who start up their engines prior to leaving the marina and then leave them running for 25 minutes while they faff about with fenders and ropes and then stand chatting to others whilst we slowly expire from their fumes:(

People who on quiet afternoons and evenings have their VHF radios blasting out at full volume

I could go on........

Perhaps I am just a grumpy old woman

May
xx

All those: NBs/mobos etc which do not reduce speed when passing moored boats. I'm probably just pouring boiling water into my packet soup.....
(and don't want my 14ft dory hull washed onto the towpath....)

Why do bigger boats accellerate when I am trying to cross a safe distance in front of them, making even bigger waves for us to cross? Are they scared of the wake from a smaller boat or do they just feel challenged by a sports cruiser accellerating?

Jet Skis and people what do not know their Col Regs and think they are still a Sailing Boat when they have their engine on.

oh and Jet Skis, OMG I hate them, did I mention also that i do not like Jet Skis:mad:

Saw a jet skier getting a rollocking from Hamble Harbour master 2 weeks ago, it was great, Harbour master chased after him at full pelt up river towards fuel pontoon at Port Hamble.... I did enjoy.. First time I have ever seen the HM boat at full whack down the river.... now that did make some wake but funny how nobody minded! :)

and you didn't think to record it on your phone/camcorder/camera, I'd have paid to see that!:D

some seem to understand how to behave, but in MY experience the majority of them are clueless.

Current Pet Hate,

People who keep asking , "when's your boat going back in the water? you're missing all this beautiful weather", as if I didn't realise, I'm old, not DEAD.

And they always seem to be non boat owners!:D which is great, 'cause it must be really pissin' them off.

Also people who insist on anchoring to close to us (and other boats). Even when an anchorage is virtually empty someone will come in and plonk themselves down close enough that if we swing in different directions we will hit each other.

Use your own chart and echo sounder and do not assume that just because we are there that there is enough water.

Oh lordy there are so many

Yotties tacking in narrow fairways
Yotties failing to observe ColRegs when under power
Boaters who object to you rafting against them in busy harbours
Boaters who moor carelessly on pontoons and dont leave space for others
Superyachts completely ignoring ColRegs on basis that might is right
Charter boats that clutter up anchorages for days without moving
People who inflict their musical tastes on other people in marinas and anchorages
Nude bathers that really ought not to
People who walk sand on to my boat
Jellyfish

I could go on but my BP is already rising

Narrowboats off the canal and chugging up river at two knots, weaving all over the place, old diesel cement mixer engine at full throttle, blowing smoke rings and seriously overheating; bloody silly painted teapots on the roof and ye olde worlde castles painted on the side of the boat.
Of course the name painted on the side will be "Somewhere" in an incredibly twee font.

Particularly hate the stupid triangular look they have at the cabin front with an old lucas sealed beam stuck on with no nails for good measure.

Rope fenders, damned beardy wierdies, and the entire shooting match looking for the so incredibly twee it makes you want to vomit; Bide a Wee Tearoom and Cake Emporium for darjeeling, jam scones and a £120 painted tin chamber pot in floral design.

So that's an, I hate narrowboats then?:D

What a relief. I thought it was just me!

Add to the list - boaters who are just so smug about their boat handling and mooring abilities. So long as you don't do too much damage (and it ain't my boat) who cares?

Harbour hoggers

People who bring their boat (on trailer) to the waterline at the slipway, and THEN proceed to prepare the ropes/fenders

Un-educated boat users (Colregs, common sense)

People approaching piers/anchorages at silly speeds - whats the rush?

Why do stinkies insist on travelling AT the speed limit within harbours ... especially on light wind days through the racing fleet ...

Well I dont insist on travelling at the speed limit, but below around 6-7kts in my boat and the steering is not so good. On a busy day a run from East head up to Chi marina was like a work out on the wheel.

But I usually just tried to keep out of everyones way. I'm not in Chi now, the run down to the sea was too long and too busy. As a stinky I couldnt understand why all the little yachts insisted on racing in and across the middle of the channel when there was ALL THAT space in Chi harbour. :p
