You are SO right, so VERY VERY right - except when your guests are fellow boatowners who know how to behave themselves, and if they don't they KNOW that we know how to get our revenge

I know, Pauline, (and it's a lot cheaper than bottled water) but it still hurts when it costs the equiv of 250quid for 200 US gal and it only takes me about 120nm (with a reserve). You'll notice however that that's the only pet hate re boating that I have. I could change to a diesel-powered boat I suppose, but it does not make economic sense. As people say, if you worry about the cost then you shouldn't have boat. I'm not worrying yet! Merry Christmas.
p.s. a wind-up for the BB: temp here didn't get above 21C here today for the first time since last April, I think. Have to get out me woollies as it feels quite chilly.

Listen, matey, you'd be a touch intemperate if you had 19 feckless relatives coming to Xmas lunch plus a mother-in-law who appears to be staying until Easter
Oh, and the dog likes being kicked; its the only stimulation he gets since his appendages were forcibly removed

Re: Hasty exit

Solution to your prob.

Send me your phone number and I'll phone you on christmas morning. You can then tell the gathering clans that the boat is sinking and you have to go there imediatly. Sneak the cans of beer and the turkey sandwich's without anybody seeing them as explanations can be difficult and nobody believes that the best way to stop a leak is to plug it with an empty beer can.

Make all haste to the boat where you can relax with a few tins until you feel the coast is clear at home.

If this is too complicated carry on digging the escape tunnel.

Re: Hasty exit

Thanks for the offer but I tried a similar wheeze last year - freezing weather, better check the boats OK, dear, see you later - so SWMBO's radar will be on maximum gain this time. I've arranged a gas leak at the office for this year

Re: Hasty exit

Sounds like a good line. Fortunatly in my case SWMBO loves boats and hates family get togethers as much as I do. Hense the staying on the boat over Christmas.
Maybe we could get together and publish a book containing all the good time, tested excuses that can get one to the boat in desperate circumstances. It's bound to be a best seller in the boating world

Merry Christmas

Re: Deck shoes

Mike

Ignore the recent MBM deck shoe test. Get the Dubarry Gore-Tex ones. They are waterproof one way and keep your feet wamr snug and dry. They dry out quite nicely even if the water gets in over the top and feet don't get hot or sweaty on hot days. Grip fairly good and a slight heel. Best I've found so far.

Guests (who are non-boaty) - ohhhh I couldn't agree more.

Re: Deck shoes

I was suffering from aching heel and ball of foot.(As if they were bruised.) Stopped using deck shoes and away went the pains. I can only assume that deck shoes don't give sufficient support if one wears them constantly which was my wont.

Re: jobs worth\'s

You know the type ,they almost want you to salute when they come running along the quay begging for due's .
After a very hard and long sea run from Pinmill to the Wash ,I stopped over in Lowestoft .As my old tub was as rough as you can get I thought it best to turn into the fish market side of the dock rather than the posh RYC.
This was at around 02.30 hrs on a very nasty night ,I'd been on the go from 06.00 the previous day and after sorting through problems at Pinmill left at 13.45.
I was in quite a tired state to put it mildly problems along the way re fuel blockages meant I'd worked none stop to get that far .
I awoke around 09.30 and thought a stretch of the legs was needed ,so up I climbed to the dock side and yes he was there almost like a traffic warden waiting to pounce .The look of a man about to score brown nose points was all over his face.
Then it was :where did you come from we had no reports of a : looking down at my thing I suppose wandering how to put it so as not to get a smack on the nose ,Boat coming in :.
I explained I'd got in around 02.30
ignoring that he went on
No one at the bridge reported seeing you come in
God I though why me
I'
You have to pay
RIG
in the office at the end
O
how long is
Oh I wanted to just ""
through clenched teeth
It's 28 foot ,bet he'd already paced it
Where are you going
still looking down at my boat as though some sea gull had dropped it
When I said the wash
The look of disbelief and after thurther questions re radio flares and stuff
off he finally went no dought to write out a report in triplicate
I paid ,my god did I £22.50
that was after the other jobs worth told me the dead line for the next twenty four hours was fast approaching .
Needing to top up my spare diesel supply I popped into the RYC while passing the time told the nice fella there how much I had been robbed to pay for mooring up in the dilapidated fish docks he told me it would have cost me £16.50 per day and I would have the use of hot showers and club facilities while there .But my boat is not the sort of boat you moor up next to those I pointed, yes it is he said your always welcome """"
There that's my one real gripe

How so right your are on all three.
1. Have the same problem with deck shoes, but found the cheap ones better and cheaper to replace!
2. Non Boaty guest always try to be too helpful and get in the way. I remember once, just before we set off I went to the marina loo only to come back and find half the fenders were removed, save me time they said- sod the scratches!. Then the unhelpful - get back to the marina, they go to the pub while I wash down the boat and load the car.
How is it no one interested when you need help anti-fouling!
3. M3 Sunday night a real pain, can't stand doing 40mph all the way home with some t****r hogging the outside lane.

Merry Christmas.

RM.
