Useful day with an electrical engineer yesterday and , hopefully, we have resolved this issue.
The 55A ground fuse that supplies the solenoid and glow plugs circuits was blown. No sign of any burning or discolouration so suspect simply an old age thing. Anyway, that sorted the problem of not being able to stop the engine!
Also inspected the whole basic wiring system in the engine bay replacing some undersized connecting leads between batteries and remaking several crimped terminations as well as cleaning and tightening all connections thoroughly. Found several instances of poorly applied heat sleeves covering parts of the connectors which wouldn't have helped!
End result is that the charging side of things is now showing significantly higher charge rates reaching the batteries than was previously the case and that various odd happenings regarding alarm indicator lights have been sorted as well.
So, fingers crossed that a run out soon will show it was a day well spent. I certainly feel a lot more confident in the electrical installation.
