Personal transport back from Rouen

We plan to sail from Poole to Le-Havre then Rouen around the end of May we will be leaving the boat in Rouen.
I need to travel back from Rouen to Poole to pick up my camper and drive home.
I think I should just catch a train Rouen to Le-Havre and then the LD line ferry to Portsmouth which I think departs 1700 local time.

Main question is " can I just roll up at the ferry terminal and book a foot passanger ticket" or do I need to book in advance.
Any other advice such as station to Terminal ( Taxi?) will be welcome.
Also any long term parking ideas in Poole/Portsmouth for my van ( at the worst I will leave it at my campsite)

Take care with this. It is much better to book if you possibly can.

I wanted to return, one way from Roscoff with Brittany Ferries. Ringing up in advance in the UK I was assured there was no problem, just walk up, it will be 60 Euro, single fare. I asked if this was 100% correct, "yes it is".

I did walk up two weeks later, and the girl behind the desk said, no problem that will be 125 Euro. I generally don't get cross with folk doing their job and I was very polite but I made it clear I was going nowhere at that price. The queue behind me got longer and longer. I don't think she could sell me a cheaper ticket; in the end I suspect she booked for me, via the internet or used her staff facility. I had to settle in cash.
It was touch and go and if I had got snotty, I might well have still been there.

Answers company representatives give over the phone are not worth the paper they are printed on.

Welcome to UK E-Borders; we don't care about your vessel & Crew safety, but we do care about when we can tick the box- if it goes pear-shaped, it's the MCA's problem, and not on our budget!
My Parent's and the generation who trained us are spinning at 12K revs in their last resting place.:(
 
You could get the train from Rouen all the way to Cherbourg and take the fastcat to Poole. Don't know about booking or fares but you can call Brittany Ferries here to ask.
 
Thanks guys. Vic... new computor on order but I then need to ensure my dongle will work in France I got an Orange dongle on a short term low volume contract it worked well but then my hard drive failed!
The dongle was a trial really, we want to have a good system working for a longer holiday ( with the boat in the French waterways) but that will be July.
Tranona.... yes.. looked at Fast Cat from Cherbourg... train there a bit more of a treck but stilll a possibility.

There used to be a yellow/black ferry, for commercial vehicles, from Cherbourg to Poole, very useful nav aid in the days before GPS or DECCA and the one I used for boat-collection.
It might be worth investigating that.
Otherwise I'd go with Tranona's suggestion - but would definitely book (you may have to buy a return ticket, as a foot-passenger, and promise not to leave the ferry.

Hi Charles - really in the past again! Truckline (which is part of brittany Ferries) stopped running those two (Coutances and Purbeck) 15 years ago when the Barfleur came in (along with various other roros at different times). Last year that was withdrawn due to lack of demand and all that remains now are the Condor fastcats which do a mixture of routes to Cherbourg, Channel Islands and St Malo and a big freight only roro called Cotentin.

You are right they provided good company for cross channel trips, wearing a groove twice a day from Poole to Cherbourg and helpful picking out cherbourg entrance for you.
