Personal import of Radar?

Thinking of buying a Radar direct from the States.

E.G $1000 = £625
Postage $50 = £033
inc VAT @17.5% = £ 773

So a Furuno 1622 at £925 uk would be around £150 cheaper direct import a
saving of 16%

Isn't there a C&E code which exempts import duty for radio ( Radar is
radio?? )

Regards

Bob

Would be happy to recieve your Radar or whatever (Legal) and forward as as "Gift" or "ships stores in transit" 5% commision + shipping but no guarantee that HM Customs will ignore it. My guess is that even if they decided to land you with VAT and import duty it would still be cheaper than UK prices!! PM Me

Will be doing the same as soon as funds are available. West Marine seems to offer very good value and allowing for shipping, VAT etc it seems to save £100-£150. Dont see why I should give that much to a UK supplier.

when you buy from eg West Marine they quote prices vat and carriage paid and you're guaranteed not to have customs hassle so the procedure can't be all that difficult.

a call to the customs should clear up your questions.

I have ordered lots of gear from the States. Customs will add VAT & Import duty to the Total cost of the order. This includes the shipping costs. Import duty is around 5% but is dependant on the item being shipped. I called customs on this and they were very vauge saying boating related items would attract import duty of between 3% and 10%.

Still usually works out cheaper.

I've bought plenty of goods from <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.westmarine.com>Westmarine</A>. They shipped my goods using DHL and the landed cost has been as much as 50% less than the UK retail price. It helps if you can get the goods delivered to your boat as "yacht in transit" because then there's no VAT or import duty.

If you are not in the UK be carefull of "yacht in transit" - for example if it arrives in Spain like that, a lot of the time it will sit in customs until a Customs Agent clears it, as the Yacht in transit is seen as a claim for tax free delivery that will need to be backed up..
(also dont use DHL into spain, most others are OK). Customs agents are not that cheap!

Bought my radar from ebay from US supplier. Saved hundreds, even after delivery and tax. Checked out supplier beforehand of course but radar was brand new, boxed, warranted and about same price in dollars as pounds here.

Good luck

Talk to customs & excise.
They will give you a commodity code for personal import.
They will then tell you what duty will be levied on import into the uk.
For example the duty on engine parts is 2.7%.

Not bad if you wish to stay legal.

The shipping costs can sometimes be prohibitive though, check before ordering.

<font color=blue> I think but cannot be sure, that a Radar can be classed as boat safety equipment and if shipped to you as such does not attract any taxes what-so-ever.
