The ammeter on our Rival 41 has turned up its toes. It seems to be a Perkins/VDO instrument of a size which is no longer current (no pun intended). Contemporary models seem to be around 2" diameter whereas the one I wish to replace is around 2.5" diameter.

I'm after a +- 50amp for preference, but I guess +- 30 would do the job. Anyone know of a source for something like that?

You can get a 'converter ring' so you can use a 2" gauge in the original 2½" hole from VDO. I did this a couple of years ago when I replaced an old VDO gauge.

I got it from a VDO 'dealer' on eBay(he was selling a lot of VDO stuff) - but he is no longer registered so cannot advise who it was - and of course I can't find any paperwork! (it was over 2 years ago)
