Yacht is based in La Rochelle and just back from a week's maintenance. Not run for some time but all seemed fine. Twin engines M225TIs (YD). Port engine started as normal (after oil and cooling water checks). Ran for 20 mins until temperature came up to normal, good cooling water outflow. Same checks on stbd engine which stated but although oil pressure was correct, low lube oil warning lt and alarm came on. Engine bay was open and dark smoke started coming from engine port side. Almost instantaneously oil pressure gauge went from normal to zero. Shut down engine, wiring was burning on port side from oil pressure sensor, hence the smoke. Wiring self-extinguished. Engine is 2007 but only 800 hours and annually serviced and has run faultlessly. Do I just replace the wiring and are such parts available?

I have M135's & get spares from DB Marine 01628 526032 http://www.dbmarine.co.uk

Your sensor & the whole alarm circuit needs checking. Probably a short somewhere caused by a chafed wire. Whichever wire overheated, then took out the pressure guage wire causing the guage to drop to zero. Maybe it took a fuse out as well. It looks like there are some other wires in that bit of the harness so maybe they are the source of the issue.

Good boat electrican will fix the wiring but need to find what caused this.

Many thanks for your advice. My concern too was to fix the wiring might be just a symptom rather than the cause, although an oil pressure sensor should be relatively foolproof. Will contact DB Marine and appreciate you taking the time to respond.
