Perkins sabre marine engines

Any one with any experience with the above engines-leisure rated? Any feedback appreciated

You need to look at the rating very carefully, the M225Ti is in fact rated to 204hp plus or minus 10%, so could worst case be 180 and best base be getting near the 225 its badged as.

I think the 265 is in fact about 240 and the 300 about 260.

I believe spares can be expensive, especially of course manifolds and coolers etc, I'm not sure how well its supported, even though Sabre are owned by Catapiller, I think its not their main business interest.

Having said all that, i had a M225Ti for a year, did about 150 hours, its was 5 years old at the time, it ran very cleanly, quiet, oil tight, never missed a beat. I'd consider a pair for my current boat if the Cummins B series wasn't so much better.

Naturally aspirated.

The above at 135hp (no turbo) is an excellent slogger and fitted to many Dutch steel boats. Mainly now replaced by 150hp version as original couldn't meet new emmission rules.
135hp is a super smooth and quiet 6 cylinder engine with very little smoke and ideally suited to slow speed environments.

i have 14 year old twin 225Ti perkins sabres in my current boat of 6 years and found them pretty bombproof. Am not a techy so I can't vouch for their efficiency, power output versus other engines etc but they have taken me from Poole to Greece and many places in between without missing a beat. Somebody above mentioned spares were expensive. Not so in my experience. Servicing parts such as Oil and fuel filters, impellors etc all cheaper then the volvo I had previously, as for other spares - dunnno, never needed any!

I,ve got a Perkins M135 in my steel boat done about 1500 hrs no probs so far, doesnt use any oil between services, starts well and no smoke, also very quiet.

Good reliable engines, spares readily available from Finning Poole and they provide a very prompt service and parts are very reasonably priced.
In my experience they just dont go wrong as long as they are looked after

What people forget about Perkins Engines is that apart from the "Marinised Bolt on bits" What you have is a simple tractor engine. And spares are available everywhere (and cheap) Most mobile mechanics who go round farms (like mine) can strip and re-build a Perkins engine (blindfold with one hand tied behind their back, if you know what I mean)
The Perkins 4236 which I had in my Nauticat 33 was the same engine I had in my JCB and my Massey Ferguson 165. And the grey which the Nauticat engine compartment was painted was the same grey as the two tone MF tractor.
So if I wanted a mechanic to do an engine repair on my boat would use a mobile farm mechanic and it would be cheaper. (unless it was the wet bits).

Acert technology

The latest Perkins Sabre 1100 series that are just launched uses the caterpillar ACERT component (naturally owned by caterpillar)
