I,ve got a slight coolant leak from the plastic header tank on the above engine.Its leaking from the overflow as it goes into the tank (the pipe is approx.5/16th dia)Its a peculiar arrangement it seems to consist of a black plastic threaded piece that comes out of the tank with a locknut to tighten,its leaking from this joint.The seal on the 5/16th pipe is by a compression joint,this part is not leaking.When you put your finger in the header tank you can feel a hexagon head that is part of the threaded piece that the compression joint tightens onto.I think it will be possible to put a screwdriver onto the hexagon part(which is inside the tank) to stop it turning as its not possible to get a spanner in.Anyone had experience of this type of header tank?Not shown in the workshop manual and the coolant was too hot to go into it more todayOn the filler cap its says BLAU made in Germany.Googled Blau but no joy.

Ps.do you have anything to show the exact location of the engine thermostat.Am aware it is in the tangle of pipes just above heat exchanger.

Thanks for replying,I,ve got a workshop manual so will look for exact location of thermostat when next on boat.I,ve got the drawing you posted.My problem is that the 2 pipes with right angled bends go into the header tank as shown and its leaking from the the joint of the port side one. when you put your finger into the tank you can feel what appears to be a hexagonal head of the piece that goes thro. the tank to connect to the compression joint for the pipe with a right angled bend.If there is a fibre washer on this hexagonal piece its going to be a bu--er to replace.Just wondered if anyone had worked on the header tank.Trouble is that these engines are that reliable its doubtful if anyone on the forum has.

Have got the Customer Info Pack.The User Handbook and the Installation Manual,but none of them go into any better detail than that diagram.

I had huge leaks of coolant with a brand new Perkins engine. This occured after several hours at sea and was due to painted factory collars who were not tightened enough on rubber hoses.

Thanks oldgit for your help.Unfortunately it doesnt show enough detail on the drawing.Its the hexagonal piece inside the tank thats a bit wierd. Going down this week to have another look.
