Not really Boaty but post is about engines.

Our generator which has a Perkins 3012 tag3a V12 56 litre engine somehow lost oil pressure and has sustained internal damage (as yet unknown extent) An engineer from the generator service company has said that he can see signs of metal in the sump using a endoscope / boroscope device.

His opinion is that the engine is beyond economic repair due to problems with spares as the unit is quite old.

Does anyone know if there is anyone who can recondition engines of this type or where we may buy a second-hand unit.

I know of Diperk and am just looking for other options.

Not 100% certain which engine you are referring to.

Largest engine Rolls Royce built was Condor V12 but only 26 litres, same base engine as Challenger tank weighs about 21/2 tonnes. This engine was used in generator applications however would be unlikely to have a 1,000 hp @ 1,500 rpm genny rating.

Are you sure is is a Perkins Rolls, as Dorman also came under Perkins wing and they did a 45 litre V12, however this is a real he man of a motor weighing in at 6 tonnes, but does have a 1,000 hp @ 1,500 rpm G drive rating.

IF you are slightly adrift on your Rolls data and you do have a Condor base motor life could be good as Finning are re-powering the whole RN Archer class of patrol vessels, CV12's coming out and CAT C18's going in. Holyhead Marine doing the work. Call Finning or ask for Sean workshop controller at Holyhead Marine ask what is happening to the old units.

Pray you have a Dorman cracking motor, Rolls Condor, two RR Eagles glued together in 60 degree V yuk.

Hi Latestarter1 ( I think you are right, it looks like a Perkins version of the Condor.

The engine looks a bit of an early hybrid as it has Rolls Royce cast in the rocker box castings yet it is manufactured by Perkins according to the name plate but the Perkins engine number at 17 is quite early so may be Perkins using up castings.

It is twin turbo V12 configuration and I am afraid to say I think my memory has let me down and it is only 26 litres (I think the 56 came from its fuel consumption in gallons per hour at full power)

So it looks like a Perkins version of the Condor V12. The 1000 HP was correct (ish) but that was its standby rating and a bit tongue in cheek however the genny is rated for 800 Kva max but we have never run it any more than about 700 kva by just backing off the 1 Mw Furnace load.

Don't suppose you have a spare 900 to 1000 HP Cummins with generator spec lying around :)

I will in the meantime contact Holyhead Marine.

Surprising number of Italian builders fitted the Rolls Royce CV12 marine engine in the 80's built at Rolls Royce Diesels, Sentinel Works. Rolls Royce was Shrewsbury's largest employer in 1979, 3600 employees. 1981, still Shrewsbury's biggest employer, 2000 on the payroll. By 1984, Vickers which had been pretty much gifted the company made 2 million profit by selling Rolls Diesels to Varity Perkins, with licence to use the Rolls Royce brand until 1988, it was still Shrewsbury's biggest employer, 1300 on the payroll.
1997 Perkins purchased by CAT picking up Shewsbury plant along the way, now the Sentenel site is a Morrison Supermarket, and housing, no longer Shrewsbury's biggest employer!! Sourcing Rolls Royce (Perkins) Diesel parts is now an expensive nausea. Sort of a British national trend is it not?
