I have a Perkins 4-108 diesel engine in the boat. I have found diesel fuel in the oil pan. I would appreciate knowing in which way is it possible for diesel fuel to invade the oil system.

Change the fuel pump and have new seals fitted to the injector pump, it solved my problem. ihave just done the same to the other engine while it was out.

Almost certainly the lift pump. The only other possibility is for the piston rings to be very worn and the fuel to leak past them to the sump, but if this were the case you would have other symptons. Smoky exhaust, light grey in colour and power loss which should be noticable. Most important that the oil & filter are changed after remedying, as if the fuel in the sump ignites you could get a runaway, which is almost always terminal for the engine. Good luck.

Fuel can get past the seals at the back of the injection pump into the timing case.
Through a damaged/worn lift pump diaphram.
And also check the injectors for leaking snapped of nozzles.

I have diesel in the engine oil of my Perkins 4-108 engine. I have replaced the lift pump, no luck. I have been told the high pressure pump could have a bad seal and leak into the oil. However, the engine runs well, and after changing the oil and filter, I ran the engine 3 hours. Checked and discovered no diesel in the oil. The engine set for 6 hours, no running time, and diesel at least a quart was in the oil. How would diesel enter the oil system thru the high pressure pump only after the engine has been run, shut down, and set. Any other entry possiblilities? HELP
