Perkins AGAIN!

Finally after a new (rebuilt ) fuel pump, new diesel, new injectors and a new fuel line and filters the old Perkins has come to life.
The only problem is that it smokes too much (white smoke) and there is fuel in the water coming from the exhaust - not black unburnt fuel but the nice rainbow coloured stuff.
It also sounds to be misfiring.
I am inclined to think its not the head gasket as before all the new bits went on it didnt smoke or throw out fuel.
All the injectors are in their seats and the pump timing marks are set exactly.
I have tried different fuel (straight from a jerry can) and tried bleeding the injectors but nothing helps.
Is there anything else I could try or I am going to have to take the head off for a look.

When the pump was fitted, was it timed correctly? seen a 6354 do this with incorect timing. (Problem is i cannot remember if its to advanced or retarted - will have to check books)

If this is a 6 354M, then a small amount of unburnt diesel in the exhaust, giving a small slick around the exhaust outlet is entirely normal for these engines.
If it's white smoke and misfiring, then it's one of three things....
either:
fuel metering unit timing incorrect,
head gasket faulty allowing water to leak into bore
water cooled exhaust manifold inner rusted through allowing water into bore.

White smoke is always a symptom of water getting in somewhere.

Assuming you've checked all injectors etc by cracking each one in turn, to find out which cylinder is causing the misfire.
If it turns up on 5 or 6 then the exhaust manifold is favourite becuase they always fail at the back because of the angle of incline.

Couple of things to check.
Tappet clearance. Are they correct? If not then this will cause the problems that you are having.
Also give it a compression test.
You can adjust the timing up or down slightly by turning the pump.
Check it's cooling well.
