Perkins 499 diesel

I have just been asked to visit and start a Perkins 499, which has not been started for 5 years. Anybody know if they have camshaft belts? Also do they have a separate lift pump to the injector pump. or are they combined. Finally are they self bleeding with a return line to the tank?

Fantastic web site Nigel (http://www.motoren.ath.cx) Just downloaded full 115 page BMC 1.5 manual. However I would not even waste my time trying to contact Perkins direct. I had a problem with our 1000 HP V12 engine and the bu**ers would hardly even speak to me. They actually said "why are phoning us direct, we don't talk to end users" talk to one of our distributors. Frank Perkins would probably be doing somersaults in his grave. Made me even more angry as I was in the process of buying two 25 HP industrial units for some pumps I was building. Anyway once again great web site.

The 4 99 was a standard OHV pushrod engine (no camshaft belt) and I am sure it had a cold starting aid similar to the 4.107. The starting aid was a heater in the inlet manifold which had diesel fuel squirted onto it to provide fuel vapour for the engine to fire up on.

An engine of that age will not be self priming and the norm for engine in the period was a separte lift pump but they usually had a small level. Ther is a good chance that there will not be any air in the pipe between the fuel pump and the injectrors assuming it has not been run dry.

With regard to starting an engine which had been lying for 5 years I would try and turn the engine by hand with the stop lever tied back. There will not be any starting handle so you would need to take a socket set and hope that you have one big enough to engage the hex nut on the crankshaft pulley. With the stop lever still tied back I would run the starter motor for about 20 secs burst and then wait a few minutes and repeat in order to get some oil round the engine. Some people would advocate taking out the injectors and squirting some oil into the cylinders but this could lead to problems of hydraulic locking. I would however add some oil into the rocker box as this will be the last place to get any oil once the oil pressure has built up. You will need to check that oil pressure has built up very quickly, I once had a Volvo size on me within a few minutes of starting as the oil pump had not primed.

I would avoid using any form of Starting Aid such as easy start as this will wash off what little oil is on the cylinders. A techniques I have used with reasonable success is to remove the inlet air filter and direct the nozzle of a hot hair paint stripper into the intake when trying to start the engine. (the wives hair dryer would do at a pinch but a Black and Decker is the best)

I have a 499 in my boat and it's very similar to the 4108/9. PM me your email and I will send Perkins starting instructions and other details via email. Would also ignore suggestions NOT to contact Perkins, they have always treated me with great help and servility.

Perkins web-site....

When I bought my present baot with an old 4.99 - they were excellent and gave me all sorts of hints and tips about the starting etc. The guy who installed the engine originally hadn't fitted the diesel tin and pipe to the cold start in the air-intake ... so it was an Easy Start job to start her.
With their advise I got her to use the cold-start aid - which many said after 30 yr of Bradex would be lucky !! In fact she worked fine - till water got in her and locked her up and finally siezed.

It was a bloody good lump and I was sorry to see it go .... anyone wants the lump for spares / repairs - PM me ..... I'm told that she most likely can be working again .... I am not so mechanically apt and decided to put a second-hand 107 in which fitted perfectly of course .... plus I have about another 8 HP from it .... My 4.99 was 32 HP.... not the usual 28 HP version, the 107 is 40 HP.

Funny enough the 107 didn't have the diesel tin either !! But she starts just on the heat from the plug without any diesel !!! OK - I have connected the fuel return line to tank via a T piece to feed a drop to it ....

Hopefully the lift pump will have a manual option so that I can prime the injector pump. I think to be safe I will mechanically hand wind the engine to try to get oil moving, and then crank it in the starter with the decompressor activated. I must tanks all those who have contributed specially with regard to the excellent site, and advice with regard to cold starting. I am not sure how I am going to get SWMBO hairdryer or my B&D Paintstripper near the inlet manifold. At least I will not have to worry about cambelts problems....
