This is a shout for assistance and the sanity of my father....stuck in Spain.

Perkins 4108 marinised

All was well on crossing across then during a run from harbour the engine gave nasty clanging sounds and was stopped.

Investigation followed and it was found 3 out of 4 vib mounts loose.....possibly cause of noise. All injectors removed, engine cranks freely. Injectors replaced and whilst trying to bleed on starter motor the engine labours very slowly, draws high current....enough to melt leads!. Batteries ...new and full charged. Injector pump and injectors overhauled and ok. Only issue is crank has a reasonable amount of play i.e clearance to flywheel is on the large side. Again no issues when injectors removed. Finally starter motor returned to UK, fully checked with no problems.

Any ideas?

[whilst trying to bleed on starter motor the engine ] why not use the fuel pump by hand,,could be bad earth on starter, is the banging coming from the gearbox drive plate?

As the engine has not seized, and the starter is in good order, I would have a serious look at the cables and their connections. High contact resistance will develop a lot of heat and also reduce the power of the starter.
My 4108 (mass free) starter also has a separate minus cable, that should also be checked. So check all battery cables for proper contact.
How are the contact point in the starter solenoid? If you cannot open it, you could use a heavy screw driver to "short" the contacts, be prepared for some (!) sparks, this will show if the solenoid is the cause of the troubles
Does the cable from the starter switch (key) provide suffcient current to operate the solenoid?
I think it unlikely that your crankshaft has so much play that the starter gear will jam in the flywheel gear.
Good luck and I hope this helps,
Theo.

Did you close the water inlet when bleeding the injectors? If not you may have flooded the engine with water. An increase in the oil level (oil floats on water) can cause the pistons to hydraulic placing extra load on the starter and hence slow cranking speeds.

The cylinders flooding (fuel/water) was my first thought, too. Another possibility is the exhaust system (including heat exchanger) is completely blocked by something. Maybe even the valves aren't opening.
